I was in the midst of a "Junteenth" Discussion around the time of MLK day. My cousin's audiologist (who's black from TX) and the Director of Secondary Education (who's black from TN) were heated. Well technically the lady from TN was heated. She kept saying how the audiologist really isn't black b/c 1. he's from TX and 2. he celebrates Juneteenth. She kept saying how it was a made up holiday because the slaves in Texas were "too dumb" (her words not mine) to realize they were free, so they stayed slaves for one more year.
All I can say is what matters to me is that June 19 is my birthday!!

lol.....true that! haha. The audiologist (who's such a sweet man) just laughed it off. He just kept cracking up because more Hispanic people attended his MLK event @ his church than did black people.
I've always saw Juneteenth as a positive event, but that lady....man was she upset that people actually celebrate it!

When I was introduced to the concept of Juneteenth it was at some type of school event in HS. A schoolmate came out and sang a song that he wrong called "On Juneteenth". The lyrics pretty much consisted of "On Juneteenth" sung in various different ways repeatedly.
Needless to say I'm no longer a fan of the name.
We still make fun of that song.

So...I have a "The Office" wall calendar at work, and I noticed yesterday that it had "Juneteenth" as a holiday today. I thought it was just an attempt at Office-style humor...
