I wouldn't do the gift card. I look at it like putting a price on a relationship. Try to come up with something fun or creative based on one of his hobbies.
If he loves baseball, take him to a game. Buy the hot dogs and beer.
If its the water, take him on a dinner cruise.
Fishing? Bite the bullet and take him. Pack a great lunch with a bottle of wine.
Golf? Sign him up for a lesson with a pro. Meet him at the driving range later.
Music? Yup, a concert.
Give us something about him to work with.
