My campus finally lowered total last year from 80 to 68. It had been at 80 for a couple of years, with no one at total. When it was lowered to 68, we were the only house at total.
Why did I support this? Because I was tired of watching the girls recruit all year long--COB in the Fall, Formal in the Winter, more COB in the Winter, possibly another COB in the Spring, etc. Plus, it was getting to the point that PNMs were dropping out of Recruitment because they knew they could be picked up by the house of their choice following. (Their mindset--why bother going through and possibly getting my second choice when I can drop out and be assured that I will get the house I want--one house in particular picked up a large number of girls this way.).
Now, after a successful Recruitment, three of the four houses are at total with the other one very close. This term has been much more relaxed around campus, and sorority life is finally looking much more exclusive and attractive than it was in the past five years. I think that our Recruitment will continue to get stronger, and that all four houses will be at total next year. I'm really glad we lowered total, but I can't wait for the day when we need to increase it back to where it was!!
