You are right, Thomas Jefferson was the third president, but the White House wasn't occupied until 1801, I believe. It could have been 1800 which would put it in Adam's term of office.
I'm really too lazy to look it up right now.

Adams was the first to live there. (Remember the "lame duck" period was much longer back then, presidents took office in March, not January)
