you flatterer, you.

Remembering when I got engaged (that's some time travel, there ) I didn't have an expectation of receiving a gift in return. ....my gift, as it were, was her "yes."

Even now, (and no, there are no present-day plans to test out this thread ) being in a different age/income bracket from the last time I got engaged, I'd be suprised to receive a engagement "gift" in return. It's just not my mindset. I'm more of a traditionalist, whose never been a big gift "receiver" anyway. I'd probably graciously accept it, but it would take me a minute to get comfortable behind it.

...unless we're talking 72-inch high-definition flat screen, then I say, BRING IT ON!

See... you'd LOVE the flat screen! Why can't she surprise you with it after you pop the question? It may be weeks or months later.

The female will have to know her "man" before she should step out and do something like that. Does it matter when? I'm sure for your B-day, Christmas, Just Because Day, Father's Day, you will want to receive something, right?

I know...let a man be a man, but sometimes...

Appraising the ring and all: He should know his female's taste. If she is expensive, then he knows what to do. He knows not to go to Sam's/ Friedman's and choose a ring full of chips. With those, you can LOOK at it and tell it's not of quality.

Hmm.. never really thought of getting the guy a gift when he pops the question. I feel better about getting him what he likes as opposed to a watch. I think I can get a better thank you from being creative...lol

i thought the gift was traditionally a pre-engagement gift, something for the bride-to-be to let the groom-to-be know she was "ready" without being pushy.

i had a girlfriend, well actually my ex' LB's girlfriend... that bought him a really nice tag heuer after they got to that point. we were all on a cruise together when she gave him the gift... it was sweet b/c he had her ring and was going to propose on the cruise anyway!

A "I'm ready" gift? I've never heard of that.

Soror 2d and Blutang,
I have never heard of that and it seems kind of odd to me. Why not just tell him that you're ready and see what he says? Why buy a gift? Who's courting whom? I'm confused. I thought he was courting ME.

If it takes all that, forget him. And what if you buy the gift and he still doesn't propose? Then you are out of $$ and good for you for trying to buy him a present so he'll propose (at least that's how it comes across to me).

YEAH! Those rings have CHIPS (diamondoid/diamonique). Those rings have NICE settings, but they are not great quality/clarity. Those rings tend to look cloudy and NEVER BLING. When you "check out" someone's ring or go to Friedman's, WalMart,Kay's, Sam's, if you REALLY look, you can see the chips inside the "diamond". When you see someone's hand, the ring looks nice, BUT take a closer look...

I learned that from a sales person many years ago.

Yep. That's crazy! LOL
I guess that's why I've never heard about a gift like that.

Maybe he should get his engagement gift right AFTER you've said "I DO".

Soror, I hear that! I googled it but couldn't find anything about the ins and outs of the pre-engagement gift for a man (not that I was giving anybody one anyway, but just curious. lol).

RhoyalTempest, what did they give the man? When she gave the man the gift, did she let him know that it was to let him know she was ready or did he just figure it out based on the gift?

pre-enagagment gifts? Yeah, they are called Bday gifts and other stuff LOL! But seriously, no, I don't see that as a wise investment to make. Him getting an engagement gift would really be pushing it still on making it a sound investment... I'd rather wait to give him a wedding gift.
