It depends on the guy. Hopefully, if the female is marrying the dude, she knows him and how he'd possibly react.
For instance, If I became engaged... The dude is a musician (on the side in his spare time). Let's say he plays BASS. I might venture out to a store and pick up something, maybe another BASS, maybe something that goes with it. *shrugging shoulders* But, whatever I would purchase, it would definately knock his socks off as as he would have knocked mine off by proposing.
