Our house had the baseball team over to dinner and I guess one of the guys wasn't clear on all the fraternities and sororities names and he asked what Psi Pi likes to do for socials. The girls at my table just about died laughing! The poor guy got a lot of ribbing from the other guys at our table. It was really funny...I bet he'll never forget that he was at Pi Phi again!

I was a music major in school and we had all 4 greek letter music oriented organizations. One of them is Phi Mu Alpha. As DZSAI girl mentioned in her post, many times music people are oblivious to greek life. Well anyway, some of the music girls we like Phi Mu Alpha groupies and they would shorten Phi Mu Alpha down to "Phi Mu" and tell people "Yeah, we're going to hang out with our Phi Mu boys" or "we're going to the Phi Mu" hayride. Being a Phi Mu myself, it used to drive me nuts. They did not seem to see the difference in the 2 organizations at all. When some of my friends from the school of music realized I was a Phi Mu they would say "Oh I didn't know it was co-ed...I thought it was all guys"

I was also a member of Tau Beta Sigma and people would pronounce the "Tau" as in "Tow" (like towel) but that's probably a common mispronunciation.

Phi Mu Alpha called Phi Mu? my QMA boys would be shocked.. most chapters call themselves Sinfonia. They are a very interesting group, a Music Oriented Social Fraternity. Some of the groups are going IFC on a local level and nmore social than music. Definately a group to watch for..
As for funny name stories :

My 15 year old brother calls Pi Phi "Pot Pie." He and his buddies think it is hilarious.

Haven't read enough of this thread to see if this has been mentioned, but all too many science majors have this inate need to refer to Alpha Delta Pi as "ADP".

When I was a Rho Chi, I couldn't stop laughing at my partnered Rho Chi, who broke down and yelled, "It's SDT, ladies, NOT STD!!"

I'm sure that most people who aren't used to seeing the Greek alphabet have a hard time remembering which symbol is which. I had a sixth-grade teacher who insisted that we ALL memorize the Greek alphabet, backwards and forwards!

The guys referred to themselves as Phi Mu Alphas....it was the groupie girls who didn't know any better....they tried to impress others but only ended up looking unintelligent.

"Triangle Hook" Dad

My friend Johanna (a DG) had one of her Anchora magazines lying around , and you can purchase merchandise in there.

One thing was a baseball cap for fathers that said "I'm a Delta Gamma [in the letters] Dad". So her Dad saw this and said,

I'm a Triangle Hook Dad!

Yes, Triangle Hook indeed!

On another note, do you ever get Rushees who are not that well informed about Greek life so they get confused between name pairs such as:

Alpha Chi Omega and
Chi Omega?

Alpha Delta Pi and
Alpha Omicron Pi?

Alpha Sigma Alpha and
Alpha Sigma Tau?

Delta Gamma and
Delta Zeta?

Phi Sigma Sigma and
Sigma Sigma Sigma?

Just wondering about that.....

I found this insanely cute, and it made me break into a goofy grin. I can see my Dad saying that, all proud (but still poking fun).

An Alpha Gam is an Alpha Gam...I have had AGD mistaken for ADD though. The only derrogatory name I've heard about us on campus (of course...who's going to say them in front of me?) is Alpha Manna Delta. We used to have a lot of athletes, and we have a slight obsession with winning intramurals. I've only heard it from the older guys, 'cause we don't really have the "athlete sorority" distinction now.

We have a strict chapter rule for recruitment which says that when talking about our sorority we must use the full name. This is because we have Delta Gamma on our campus and Dee Gee and Dee Zee sound too similiar.

When I rushed, I knew about AETT, but I was confused about AEF and AF and AFA. We had many GLOs that started with Alphas. I got it straightened out after I received my rush guide book!

Oh shoot, I went off, telling him that they do happen to stand for something and they are very special to my sisters and I. That's some non-greeks for you!

The cutest is when my little brother calls me a Kappa Triangle. Spoken like a true 12 year old...

Hehehe...I hear that all the time.."Oh! You're a KA!" Err...no! LOL

My boyfriend is a KA, so when he lavaliered me, I wore it for about a week before the pinning circle. I figured someone would notice. They sure didn't! "Oh...I thought that was our letters!"

Alpha Sigs and other such things

On my campus, we have Alpha Sigma Alpha and Alpha Sigma Tau. A lot of the stuff we see from nationals calls us Alpha Sigs... and this year one of the new sisters put it on a rush poster to rush Alpha Sig - they were taken down fast, but I wonder how many girls looked at them and were confused.
