Tiers in The SEC

I'm going to guess that you aren't from the South. Typically, I think old money Southern kids are going to want to go where their parents went (or schools that are in the family) or to schools that are in good college towns and have great Greek systems.

Out of all of those schools you listed, Vandy, Washington and Lee, and SMU are probably going to be the most heavily populated with your typical, wealthy, Southern old money type guy. I don't know many guys down here from well established families that would find going to school in the Northeast very desirable. I don't at all.

Realize that there are state schools in existence that are extremely good schools.......better or on par with some that you mentioned even. Take for instance Texas, where I go. Top 10-15 in Business, Law, Medicine, and Engineering. There are not a whole lot of schools out there that can claim that. I pretty much chose between SMU and Texas and when it came down to it......I didn't find a reason why I should have my parents pay 20,000$ + more a year for me to go to a school that probably isn't as academically strong as UT.

UT as in Texas or Tennessee?

I think our greek system is one of the strongest in the country. I don't know much at Tennessee, never had any friends go there...........which is actually kind of odd now that I think about it. I can think of people I know at every school in the SEC.......except Tenn.

I'm a grad student at Texas. I can't see why Greek Life would matter in making a grad school decision. I've seen people mention this before, and if you choose a grad school based on Greek Life, you're probably making a poor decision. To me, it's completely irrelevant. I guess you might consider alum activities in the region, but even still, with grad school you should just generally go to the best school you are accepted to.

Or the best school you get accepted to and can afford.

I could see Greek Life playing a part in grad school for some people, like if they want to advise a chapter of their GLO, or be an advisor for their Greek council or for the Greek Life office. Then again, you can still do those things if you go to a grad school with no Greek Life, or a grad school without a chapter of your GLO, as long as there is one close by.

lol its by no means making the decision, just Texas has a strong business program for big Southern Schools

Greek Life at Texas rocks. The only fault I could find with it back in my day was that the houses tended to be more territorial about socials and the like. At Georgia and Auburn, plus a couple of other common road trip stops, parties tended to be bigger and more open. At Texas they are fairly closed- due in large part I think to costs and various noise/crowd restrictions which are pretty tightly enforced.

When I was going to Georgia, my girlfriend and I were regularly invited to mixers for other GLOs. But at Texas not so much.

I got my MBA at UT- went right into the program after undergrad and actually still lived in the house my first semester (not the best idea, but fun.) PM me if you ever want more info on the program here. It is first rate and if you want to stay and work in Texas- the Texas MBA is what you want for networking and to make a very strong statement about who you are.

dang sounds like we got the same game plan here, i wanted to do undergrad business at UGA or South Carolina, wherever i end up staying at. and then goin to Texas for MBA, and then possibly Vanderbilt or UVA for law school... lol i'm all over the place i know.

But i was thinking highly about doing FIJI at UGA as i got 2 good friends in it, and i hear they are legendary at Texas. I know it doesnt matter as i stated before as ur undergrad is what really matters, but i still think it would be cool.

I'll get back at ya down the road and keep in touch, thanks for the advice and offer!

now are these the kind of guys that party hard and also are upstanding members of the college community, or the type that know they are in the best fraternity on campus and are just drugged out and arrogant.

I mean no disrespect, but i definately ran into both types of "top tier" houses, you know what i mean.

Drugs are present in fraternities to the same extent they are present in the general population- being a user or non-user in and of itself should not inform your decision for the most part. At Georgia there are some houses known for marijuana use- which I find rather low class- but aside from avoiding houses like that where most people are pot smokers, I would not get too worried about the drug question.

FIJI is a top house at both Georgia and Texas and it would be greatly to your credit to be a member if that is your destiny.

Still pretty restricted. You need to know people or be on a list generally....unless you're a female.
