Speaking of copycats of NPCs, for anyone interested, there is "Zeta Epsilon Tau Alpha" at the University of Rhode Island. Their colors are silver and teal, they support breast cancer research, they go by "Zeta". The link.

When they started, it was in the hopes of becoming ZTA. I am not sure if they gave up on that or the campus decided not to expand (this was all starting as I was finishing up advising there).

One of our chapters started as Zeta Tau Sorority (and their colors were blue & gray) because one of the girls had an older sister who was a Zeta...however, I don't think it was to this extent.

Even if a group is started up with hopes of being some NPC chapter, that should not give them the right to copy everything about that org. That is wrong on so many levels.

What if the school does expand and ZTA chooses not to submit anything for it?

Looooove the ZETA greek letters btw

Well if I were the Director of Extension for Zeta Tau Alpha, I certainly wouldn't submit anything. Like it was said before, it's just like a PNM coming decked head to toe in your sorority's colors and acting like she's already in.

Sounds trite but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so I can see how a group would want to embody the colors etc to impress an NPC group. But as someone said, some groups will not consider some types of campuses - we have stellar women come of our SCSU but some NPCs are focusing on larger schools with other benefits/alum connections etc.

I think scsugirl should meet the dphie girls and see they are the real deal and don't haze - give up some starbucks and use your birthday $ for dues. You will not be sorry. A couple of dollars now translates into a lifetime of friends - friends who will not haze you today and call you friend tomorrow.

Good luck.

To set the record straight on this group... These "Kappa Gamma" girls had not contacted KKG's HQ about possible affiliation and were denied because the campus was not of a certain prestige. And most likely, the fact that they adopted all of the symbols and colors of KKG without any intent in pursuing affiliation is probably the major strike against them if they ever tried to pursue affiliation in the future. Imitation is not impressive when the imitation is verging close to fraud in trying to purport an affiliation that isn't there. The fact that these members thought that type of pretend affiliation was okay says more about their deficient character than anything.

I can't imagine an NPC group being flattered by a copy-cat group under these circumstances. It is one thing if you have contacted that NPC and are in the process of getting a charter (and using the NPC's colors openly and with the NPC group's knowledge). It is another thing to take all the symbols and colors without having first made any attempt to affiliate. To me, it shows ignorance and a lack of respect for what those symbols and colors might mean to the hundreds of thousands of initiated women that call themselves members of the national group.

Being a Kappa is a lot more than throwing a key on a blouse... I'd think that any woman pursuing the establishment of a colony would be wise to be sensitive to that before adopting symbols, colors and letters that have a specific meaning to many women throughout this country and others.
