1) What originally made you decide that Sigma Nu was the right fit for you?
2) Did you have a formal or informal rush?
3) What advice can you give me to ensure a bid in this fraternity, specifically?

1) I originally pledged Sigma Phi Epsilon, and had the s*** beat out of me in a hazing incident. After filing a police report and getting in contact with their national organization, I took a 3 year hiatus from Greek Life. Many of my friends, during those 3 years, had joined Sigma Nu, and were encouraging me to join them. In the Spring semester of my Junior year, I rushed, pledged, and was initiated.
I gave greek life a second shot because Sigma Nu was founded on the idea that prospective members (people you one day will call your brothers) should not be hazed. Plus the guys were cool, the dues were reasonable, and the alumni are active.
2) At my school, fraternities hold informal Rush.
3) Nothing ensures a bid... but certain things will ensure that you will NOT get a bid from my chapter:
-Telling brothers that you're joining for the "3 Bs: Bitches, Beer, and Bucks", or rather, the idea that you want to drink, f***, and represent being a stereotypical frat-boy with mommy and daddy's money.
-Drug involvement
-Poor manners/lack of respect... one pledge straight up called our Lieutenant Commander a "fatass piece of s***" during a friendly game of football. He did not get initiated.
-Immaturity
If you avoid the above items, and be genuine with the brothers, you should be in a good position to receive a bid.
Sigma Nu was founded on the ideals of Love, Truth, and Honor... if you don't represent those values in your everyday life, then you likely will not find your place in Sigma Nu.
At Coe College, there are 5 fraternities:
Of these organizations, Sigma Nu is the oldest (nationally... I don't know about locally at your school), with more active chapters remaining than any of the other organizations. I believe we tie with or are close to Lambda Chi Alpha for the number of total initiated members nationally. Since Coe College's Chapter's chartering (as the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Nu), there have been almost 600 initiated members. Just FYI.
Good luck with Rush, and let us know how it goes!

Jason Allen
