That depends on the context.
What's cool for you, the people you know, or some character on TV doesn't mean it is going to be cool in other settings.

Obama is a black man so that's an example of how the race of the messenger matters. If a similar reference had been made by a nonblack person, it would not have caused a stink
only if the context and the way it was delivered was not racially insensitive.
