I agree. While I do believe that one should grow within their organization, I do not believe that a GLO should be a training ground or boot camp for the entire girl-to-woman transition. Some of these stories boil down to the lack of common sense...but like my grandmother used to say, common sense ain't common. ((sighing and shaking my head))

i think that's true. too many attend Rush thinking, "they want me" as opposed to "i hope they pick me, let me act accordingly". i know when i went to Rush, i wore black. i didn't want to be caught in the "wrong" colors. nowadays, it seems like anything goes at Rush: jeans, tees, uncombed hair, babies, you name it oh of course, topped off w/the "wrong" colors
crazy, i tell ya...

At the very last minute, I was warned by someone not to even wear black, and so I was going through my closet like a mad woman --- none of my nice clothes were going to work! They were all "no-go" colors or black, and it was 11PM the night before; what on earth was I going to do?? I made a run to the Walmart, the only place open that late that sold clothes, bought the only pair of pants and shirt that looked decent, even though they really didn't QUITE fit, and wore that to RUSH. I was soooo uncomfortable in my bad-fitting clearance rack Walmart clothes (the pants totally fell apart not too long later, but THANK YOU!!! they held together for the whole event), but I guess I pulled it off. And there were plenty of interests there in black suits!

Right, soror. Frankly, I think that black or any other neutral like brown, beige, or gray is perfectly acceptable.

I agree. You have to know how to wear it though. At my rush, we had someone with a beige skirt suit, but the skirt was short, and she had on dark black pantyhose.

At another rush, we had an individual show up in black slacks, a green t-shirt, and a Baby Phat coat. Said individual also started nodding off toward the end of rush and looking irritated like she was ready to leave.

I agree.

But to take it further, I also don't think this should be taken to the extreme. For example I can understand a prospect thinking I am going to the Delta RUSH, so I should indicate that by wearing red and white. I mean there is nothing on our website, or anywhere else that indicates certain colors should not be worn, so it is possible a prospect really would not know.

For example DSTRen, may have been told not to wear black, because the members would be wearing black at the RUSH and it was a matter of distinction.

Very honestly, imo, this whole prohibition of colors (which did not exist when I was a RUSHEE) is just another way to pre-reject folx.

Hello DSTRen13 and all,

I had to smile when I read this, because I remember hearing & having similar conversations with friends preparing to go apply for different orgs. The "word on the street" amongst many hopefuls was that ALL colors were forbidden, except for brown or grey - PERIOD! (This wasn't just limited to Rush or interest meetings; a campus atmosphere could lend itself to folks walking around looking like the Murkies from Rainbow Brite.) Black seemed like a safe enough bet, but you never knew what "they" were going to wear - and sometimes the attire was all black for rmembers too!
