What is Greek life like in your part of the state? I know Greeks aren't as popular in CA as in other parts of the country. Do you feel that way, too?

I was a California Greek. Greek Life where I went to school (CSU East Bay) wasn't very big. There were 2 NPCs and 2 NIC fraternities. We also had several locals, as well as Alpha Phi Omega.

If you compare California to a place like Georgia then, no Greek Life isn't as popular. but I think that Greeks have a big presence in California.

I was greek at a California school with a very popular fraternity/sorority system. There are plenty of greeks in California, but it isn't the end all/be all like it sounds to be in the south.

I too am a California Greek. In my day, there were 10 sororities on campus, they were all National Panhellenic, there were no locals, multi-nationals or any other councils. There were also 12 fraternities at the time, they were all IFC.

Obviously not all of those are NPC or IFC.

I'm a California greek. Sonoma state has 4 npc, 1 local sorority, 3 multicultural sororities, 3 IFC fraternities, 1 local fraternity and 2 multicultural.

Greek life is definitely not as big there as it is at other places. But it's definitely growing. NPC chapters use to be at about 50 or so a few years ago and are full at 80 now.

LucyKKG, there are plenty of California Greeks on this board, you're just not looking close enough.

Greek life is fairly popular in Southern California, especially at schools like USC, UCLA and SDSU.

So if we are talking about how prevalent the greek system is in Cali, should we not include the NPHC. I ask because they certainly hold their own in our council. It fact my sister was initiated at USC years ago. And when I attended the University of Redlands, prospective members were included in the UCLA chapter. So there was even a presence there. Not to mention there is a strong alumne chapter presence with LA Alumnae being one of our largest alumnae chapter.

So I guess, it is a matter of POV.

Kelly - I'd even add USD (Univ. of San Diego) in there - chapter size there (for sororities) is over 100 in the spring! We heard at the Order of Omega banquet a few weeks ago that about 30% of the university is Greek.

Back to Lucy's original question - there are California Greeks on here (I went to school out of state, but still consider myself a CA Greek since I live here and volunteer with my sorority), but I too feel that Greek Life isn't as prevalent as it would be if you were from the South - it's a different mind set here (at least in my experience with the girls I work with!)
