I think that the single most significant factor that is impacting Black America is ECONOMICS. Set aside education, set aside violence, set aside rap videos, set aside that BET crap. It all boils down to ECONOMICS.
This is one reason that I think that our current International program is SO important and right on time. What good is it to tutor kids if they have to dodge bullets on the way home and that's what their really thinking about? When their parents are never home to train them b/c the parents have to work two or three jobs - then little Johnny is outside being raised by his "surrogate family" (e.g., gang members)? When we send the kids to school but, b/c the school has no money, b/c the neighborhood is full of apartments and no tax dollars, that they have no up to date books? and no computers? When we preach healthy eating but the kids down the street are obese and unhealthy b/c they eat McDonald's every day b/c they can order from the dollar menu and that's all their parents can afford to spend for them to eat? And don't give me that crappola about eating healthy is cheaper than eating from McDonald's
b/c guess what? It's not.
Non-greek Sisterfriends, what are YOU doing to bolster economic empowerment in our community?
