From someone who has judged step shows, the reason it takes so long is because we have to sit there and add up all the points for the different categories. Which brings me to another point. If your chapter (or group) is hosting the step show, please provide the judges with (cheap) calculators. Adding by hand / in your head really slows the judge down. Also, it is not always the judge's fault. We turn in the score sheets to the chapter (or group in charge), then it is up to them to get the results out in a timely manner.

aww, see i thought the real reason was deeper and more profound than that. like yall were deciding who deserved to win more, or playing rock paper scissor, or whatnot. sheesh. staples sells calculators for $3.99 in assorted colors. i will make sure everyone has one in their color(s) if it means we can save a 1/2 hr on a step show.
hey soror, quick question: do judges score teams after they perform or at the very end of the show?

No. There is no depth to it. But the rock, paper, scissors idea is not a bad one....
The way I ususally do it is to take notes in the margin and put down a few scores as the groups perform. It is usually pretty easy by the end of the night who has won.
Some groups step, some groups (mostly the guys) just stand there with their shirts off grinding the floor and each other while yelling offensive remarks about the other frats. And, I'm like 'dude, you're grinding the floor and each other and trying to call another frat gay????'

I'm not a fan of step shows but I love shows where you get points deducted for trying to sex the crowd. If you aren't going to step, do not enter into a step show competition. Save your sex and your offensive remarks about other frats for your bedtime routine.
I went to a show last week where there were HIGH SCHOOL students on stage gyrating to J.Holiday's "Bed." The crowd was yelling but my Sorors and I sat there like " ." I even BOOO'd as they left the stage. Their mentors need to be flogged. The mc of the show said "yeah...I heard you all screaming...you forgot these are children...."

Were you by chance in TN for this show? I swear I was at a show and the same thing happened.
One of my biggest pet peeves has to be when a step show has a majority of participants from the same fraternity or sorority. I love the bruh but after 2 teams I can predict whats going to happen. Variety is a good thing.

YES!!!! That is so annoying!! Especially when the majority of the audience are members or connected to the organization. I went to a stroll comp this past spring, and there were 2 teams of 2 different orgs competing...two from the same org made it to the finals and the winners were one of the teams from the other org who made up most of the audience, their sisters were also in attendance; I really like variety in shows i wouldn't have minded having another fraternity/sorority on stage.
Another thing I must add which pertains mainly to fraternities...the 'thug' look isn't appealing especially if you're supposed to be a college educated EXAMPLE for younger men of color, I want my folks to be proud that I joined a brotherhood that helps folks like me out, not for em to scold me cause they may think it's a gang, LOL. I also don't care for many chants, ESPECIALLY those that involve various profanities or some that are pretty much just folks hollering nonsense! We're much more grown than this, let's act like we are!

I agree! I went to a show at my alma mater and the frats were all grinding and mess and I swear I felt like I was watching kiddie porn...they were all children to me and it was NOT cute....the shows were damn near explicit...yuck!!!

Which brings me to my biggest pet peeve (sorry genetlemen): Why aren't fraternities expected to show respect and class at all times? At one of the last greek parties I went to, two frats were getting into it and one of their chants contained the line "I f****ed your b****." I seemed to be the only one surprised and disturbed. At "fun" functions I almost always hear cursing and misogyny from fraternity members while wearing para and clearly representing their organizations, even in the presence of older members. I know that if I had constantly heard NPHC women collectively yelling things like "XYZ, f*** you trick a** b****es," at each other, I wouldn't have considered joining for a second.
Now perhaps you've seen sorority women acting classless, there's no need to try to prove that it happens. But when it happens, it is a scandal and you talk about them, no? When men do it it seems expected. I don't understand how no one sees a disconnect between upholding certain ideals and behaving in front of crowds like you would never behave in front of your mother.

That comes from that whole pseudo macho image some fraternity members like to keep up. I still trying to figure out what is so macho about refering to women as such. XYZ frat will have a women's appreciation breakfast and that night women are all types of b****** and h** in their chants at parties. Not a big fan of those types of chants.

There is a NPHC frat at my school that used to (maybe they still do, but I don't party anymore) do this chant that would say: "F**k a ABC (NPHC Sorority), all I wanna F**K is a XYZ (another NPHC Sorority)." That would be the WORST (IMHO) of the degrading women chants especially since both sororities were present.

Step show judges don't have a national organization with meetings to make it all uniform (or do they?). There are judges who essentially do the rock paper scissors thing because they don't know what the heck they just finished watching. Whether groups are scored after each performs or at the end is sometimes based on the rules established for that show.
