From someone who has judged step shows, the reason it takes so long is because we have to sit there and add up all the points for the different categories. Which brings me to another point.
If your chapter (or group) is hosting the step show, please provide the judges with (cheap) calculators. Adding by hand / in your head really slows the judge down. Also, it is not always the judge's fault. We turn in the score sheets to the chapter (or group in charge), then it is up to them to get the results out in a timely manner.
