They can. Unfortunately, many many college students do NOT have renters insurance to cover their personal property. Since nobody was injured in this one, I feel better posting a little reminder about that here. A college boyfriend of mine accidentally burned down his fraternity house by tossing a smoldering oven mitt (which he thought he had thoroughly doused with water) into a trash can in the house. Hardly any of the residents of the house had renter's insurance and, although they were all fine, their stuff was all ruined. It's very expensive to replace your stereo's, TVs, textbooks, etc.
So, make sure you have renter's insurance! Your fraternity's insurance probably only covers the structure and fraternity property, not yours!
