Another thing I've done (besides the things listed in other posts), is give one of those blank cookbooks. It has pages to put recipies in, a little grocery list note pade, magnets, etc. Anyhow, I start one out by putting some of my favorite recipies (that I know they will like) in there. I always like it because it gives the bride-to-be some "real" food to know how to cook as opposed to the sometimes difficult (but delicious!) things in the fancy cookbooks we all end up registering for (or getting either way.)

My MOH did this for me at a shower. She had sent pages to everyone attending, and she put them in the looseleaf cookbook for me as a gift from everyone (along with more blank pages). Most of my friends cook very well, and contributed a really good recipe. But one - YIKES! Her family owned a restaurant, so she had never really learned to cook. On her page, she wrote: "Reservations", then added a long list of takeout places. To this day, I'll say, "we're having Meg's Speciality for dinner"!
On a more serious note, I like the idea of a planner that entails more than the wedding (place settings, etc). I really put mine to good use!

I ended up sending her four bridal magazines and a gift certificate to get a wedding planner - she really liked it! Thanks for all the good ideas, everyone!

When I got engaged I really enjoyed getting heartfelt cards. I know it's small, but I love them, and I still have them actually.

When my roommate from college had her shower, her grandmother gave her a huge box filled with all of her recipes on large index cards. She had been putting one together for each of her granddaughters. I thought it was the sweetest thing ever!

Love it! Maybe if you have a picture you could put it in the frame, too. OR a collage of different pictures/ etc.
