She is talking about the recruitment style of houses. At bama chapters have already compiled (or are in the process of compiling) their rush lists for fall 08. Senior and some junior girls in high school are invited to spend the weekend in Tuscaloosa and hang out with the girls in the chapter. They go to band parties, dinner and possibly the game if they can get a ticket. Chapters also have letter-writings during the year and send little notes to pnm's on their rush list just to say hello/congratulate on winning an award/happy birthday/whatever else. Many chapters have started doing "hometown dinners" where 15 or so chapter members go to the hometowns of girls and they all go out to a restaurant together. So for instance all the Birmingham girls being rushed will get together and go to cheesecake factory or pf changs with some of the actives. All of these things are in addition to what someone has called "sip and sees". We just call them teas. This all continues until around May 5 when no contact starts for bama.
I doubt LilyLover has a problem with the actual Spring Recruitment at Bama. I think it's more the recruiting methods of chapters to make girls "love us" before fall recruitment or even their senior year of high school.

It doesn't matter WHO your mother is...recruitment is about YOU. Being a legacy may get you a second look, but it won't automatically get you a bid. You're talking about a school that could fill probably 2 pledge classes with legacies.

How did nationals find out?
If it was via you or your mom, well, umm, I don't think I have to say anything more here.

lilly, how did your mother react when you were cut from her chapter? Especially since she was asked to host teas for them?

Hard rushing girls when they're juniors in high school? Don't these sorority women - both collegiate and alumnae - have lives? There must be something more important to do with their time, such as getting to know the new members that DID join their house? Something about that seems very sad and pathetic, and, well, desperate to me.

It is a bit sad and pathetic, though not really desperate. None of the chapters are desperate.
However, it is horrible to lead a legacy on as badly as lilly was. But it happens a LOT at Bama. With my chapter not so much, considering we're just 20 years old and most of our legs are in-house or from other chapters. But it happens!
So, until the PNMs know the truth -- that they're not guaranteed ANYTHING, even if their mama, sister, 3 cousins, 5 aunts and both grandmothers were an XY(Z) -- there's going to continue to be a lot of letdowns during Bama rush.
