I'm not necessarily saying that you should skip class, but I know a girl who went through rush at UC Berkeley (which is insanely less competitive) who got dropped by the houses she missed on a round because she wasn't present for a very legit reason. I don't know if it was actually her personality but it was a little coincidental...but I'm just saying...at a really competitive school it might be wise to take the tiiiiny percentage of the grade.

As a former Berkeley advisor, I can tell you their system is (or at least was a couple of years ago) that after the first day we had free invites to anyone who missed that day (and we got to see their excuses). From the second day on, if we wanted to invite someone back who was absent, that girl counted in our max number of girls to invite back. So, unless we really loved the girl from Day 1 or knew her before recruitment, it was really hard to give invites to girls who were absent over girls we had a second chance to meet.

Hope that makes sense. I'm not sure if other schools handle it the same way.

I like the free invites after the first round policy, but counting them after the first round. That makes sense. It's not that a chapter cuts you because you missed a round, it's more that you have less of a chance to impress them and make them want to keep you. Let's face it, it's not fair to be automatically cut for missing a round, but it is not fair to the other PNMs for you to be automatically invited back because you missed a round.

I had a PNM in my group who missed round 3. She had a full schedule of six chapters with high retention rates (i.e. PHA forces them to cut more women per release figures). She would have fit well in any of them IMO. Pref comes around and she was cut from 5 of the 6 chapters that she would have attended round 3 parties. I was really nervous about giving her the schedule, worried that she'd be upset. Fortunately, it was her favorite, and the chapter obviously felt the same way about her, since she got a bid there! I'm sure she would have had a full schedule for pref if she had attended round 3, but the end result would have been the same.

From the Ole Miss Panhellenic recruitment rules:

8. Potential New Members should attend all academic classes, lab, and study groups. A POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER MAY NOT MISS AN ACADEMIC CLASS OR LAB FOR THE PURPOSE OF ATTENDING A RECRUITMENT-RELATED FUNCTION. IF SHE DOES, SHE WILL BE RELEASED FROM FORMAL RECRUITMENT AND BE INELIGABLE TO SIGN A BID CARD UNTIL THE FOLLOWING SEMESETER. If there is a conflict between Recruitment activities and academic requirements, the Potential New Member should contact the Panhellenic Council so that an excuse may be sent to the sororities.

How ironic that a paragraph instructing PNMs to go to class would contain such errors.
