I realize that my campus' experience may be anamolous (sp?), but I thought I'd report it anyway.
When I went through rush, it was deferred. After I graduated, they moved it to fall. Now, after four years, they're moving it back to spring.
The initial hope was that by having it in the fall, girls would be less influenced by what fraternities say (we had a lot who told girls NOT to rush!) and have more open minds about the different chapters.
All that really happened, though, was that the number of girls doing rush went down. Quota went from 12-14 to about 8. The number of girls doing informal went up, though.
However, on my campus, very few freshmen come in saying, "Oh, I want to be Greek." I think it was over the course of the semester that they found out their preconceptions of Greek Life weren't true - "you guys aren't all ditzy after all!" A school where more girls want to be Greek from the get-go might have a completely different experience.
Also, our rush was the third week of the year, right after the boys' rush. Perhaps having it before classes or the first week thereof would be more effective.
