I think it works well for the show. Especially with Cappie/Rusty and Frannie/Casey because I know that a lot of bigs (at least in my campus culture) that once they really decide to get involved with their littles they have a lot of influence on their littles. I mean, why else would Frannie want Casey to be the next president? She has to have some personal interest tied up in Casey (wanting to continue and present a strong legacy). Then you see Casey take Rebecca because she's going to be able to heavily influence Rebecca in some way because she's her big.
As for Calvin/Evan I didn't even know they were big/little. And for Cappie/Rusty who here DIDN'T want Cappie to be his big from the moment they met? The chemisty was there. Cappie's genuine interest and nurture in Rusty was adorable! Plus it guarantees that Cappie will be on screen as much as possible.
