Yes and no. Yes because you state that they didn't need any type of approval(which I feel that's hard to believe). No because I wasn't referring to anything pertaining to the NPHC(due to it being founded after the sorority was founded). Alpha Kappa Alpha had to get approval from the officers of Howard University as well as Delta Sigma Theta(which was all before the founding of the NPHC). However, since certain people feel that I'm throwing the thread off track, my topic can be dropped. Based on what has been posted, it seems that it doesn't matter if there was an existing organization on campus with similar interests, but it depends on the approval from the officers of the university.

Back to your regulary scheduled program.
To clear up any questions, any such rules or approvals specific to collegiate sororities and fraternities at the time that Sigma Gamma Rho was founded in 1922 would not apply to her since she was not collegiate until 1929 when the Alpha chapter was established at Butler University in Indiana. Until then Sigma Gamma Rho was a professional sorority in the city of Indianapolis in Indiana. Also, while our constitution was amended in 1925 to allow women pursuing various degrees (not just education) to seek membership, we did then and continue today, to support programs and initiatives which focus on educating the youth and our communities.
