It's kind of sad to me, but I'm afraid that most of the NPCs don't have many people who would be founders of a new group today.

Despite the pioneering spirit of our own founders, we've grown really conventional, I think, and it just seems to me that the people who would create a new local from scratch wouldn't be the typically NPCers on most campuses. You'd almost have to be an interest group who formed solely with the purpose to affiliate for the NPC groups to want you, I'm afraid.

I hope it's just my SEC point of view that makes me think this.

If you're not under pressure you don't have to pioneer. My founders were the only women at their college; they formed Sigma Kappa in a way that was designed to support women in a school full of men. Your average college campus is now just slightly weighted in womens favor IIRC. Those who truly stick it out without affiliating with an existing national typically have one heck of a good reason to. Combine that with the attitude of many campuses towards locals and non-NPCs.. and the easy way is the clearest. I have the deepest respect for those who start their own GLO and persevere. Particularly when they do it in a positive (This is who we are) rather than a negative (we're not like them) manner.

I agree, but I feel like it's sad somehow that we've (NPC) lost that intensity, if that's the right word. All the groups, as far as I know, were founded to offer something that wasn't already there, but now we're as conventional and bureaucratic as the registrar's office. (Well, not really, but it's still hard to see how a group of young women who start their own group with the intention of founding a group will be comfortably absorbed by a national.)

I guess if we were really curious, we could get LucyKKG to explain the origins of Alpha Sigma Delta. She's a member of the chapter in question, right?

I'm actually wondering if any of the NBO girls (a freshman or sophomore) stuck around at UCSC long enough to get hooked up into ASD/KKG.

Well, helloooo! Why didn't someone just ask? Haha, it's late at night, and I'm lurking on the 'net, so I dug this up. No one in our chapter was ever affiliated with NBO. I joined/helped found Alpha Sigma Delta at the beginning of my sophomore year (Fall 06). There was no sign of NBO or Theta Nu Xi at that point.

I honestly don't think NBO or its members had anything to do with our founding or later affiliation. (No offense, it's just not that closely connected.) We had a different student org adviser (we have no Greek adviser) who knew nothing about NPC and expansion and such. I feel like most people mentioned in her story had graduated or moved on by the time we came about.

Also, someone mentioned how we were an interest group or something like that. That's a pretty valid statement. The school wouldn't allow NPC reps to come to campus to recruit members. They told our founding president that she needed to have a student formed organization before we could affiliate with a national organization. We were in touch with the NPC pretty early on, and we started receiving interest packets from sororities only 3-4 months after we were founded.

There were also some posts about Gamma Phi Beta and how they didn't offer Corina a bid. They just didn't have the capacity to offer that many bids. Being the only NPC sorority on campus made them huge. They're definitely the biggest Greek org on campus. It's hard to hold events/meetings with our members and we're a lot smaller than them. (But growing! )
