ZBT was founded at Columbia University in 1898 as the first secret society for Jewish men. It operated as the universal organization under a "city" charter from New York City from 1898 to 1903. In April of 1903 it was voted by the membership to change the organization to the First Greek-Letter Fraternity for Jewish men. ZBT was also the first Jewish fraternity to establish a Canadian Chapter in 1910 and the first Jewish Fraternity to receive full recognition by the NIC in 1912.

I think I shared this once before...
Our letters were chosen randomly. The ladies cut out all the greek letters, spread them on the floor, and found something they thought looked good together.
Also, before our colors were chosen, the ladies pinned ribbons of plum and olive green over their hearts to show they were part of the group. They chose these two colros because they thought it was the ugliest color combo!!
My founders were pretty funny gals!

OOOHHHH! I REMEMBERED!
Phi Sigma Pi started because the Beta chapter of Phi Lambda Epsilon was closed. (I've googled that fraternity and I think the whole org is gone)
It began at the State Teacher's College at Warrensburg, Missouri as a Professional Honorary Fraternity in 1916. It eventually evolved into a Professional Education Fraternity for Male Teachers and in 1966 expanded as an honor fraternity that included all disciplines. We went co-ed in 1977.
I think it's funny that women were granted membership only thirty years ago and now we dominate most chapters.
*Also, it's not my org-but Delta Omicron is a music sorority and it admits men. I was flabbergasted when I learned that.

Maybe she meant that she was flabbergasted that it admits men?
Mu Phi Epsilon and Delta Omicron, both originally music GLOs for women only, went co-ed in the 1970s.

Delta Upsilon
1. Delta Upsilon is the sixth oldest Greek-letter fraternity being founded in 1834.
2. Delta Upsilon is larger than the oldest five fraternities combined.
3. Delta Upsilon was the first fraternity founded as a non-secret fraternity.
4. Delta Upsilon was the only NIC or NPC society to be founded on the Williams College Campus.

Every Zeta Beta Tau website I've researched (including Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) has Zeta Beta Tau as being founded December 29, 1898 at City College of New York. "On December 29, 1898, he [Dr. Richard J. H. Gottheil] formed a Zionist youth society with a group of Jewish students from several New York City universities." This is the closest I've seen to anything about Columbia. And that the professor was a teacher at Columbia. I tried to confirm the founding at the Zeta Beta Tau HQ website. However, I could not find a history of the fraternity on their site.
In any case, I am more than happy to edit my post.

The About tab is at the bottom, not very conspicious...

It's hard to find.. you have to look at the bottom and click in 'About' to get to the history.
"Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity was inspired by Richard J. H. Gottheil, a professor of languages at Columbia University and a leader in the early American Zionist movement. On December 29, 1898, Professor Gottheil gathered together a group of Jewish students from several New York City universities to form a Zionist youth society. The society was called Z.B.T."

I guess it could go either way since he taught at Columbia but the members were from New York City Universities...
ETA: Looks like AlphaFrog and I found this about the same time..

oh wow! makes you think how every single girl's rush could ended up had Chi Omega been named something else... (im just recalling from the abundance of rush threads how PNMs often get confused by which house is which and worse, choose letters on how "greek" the letters look/sound)

I know it is confusing when it comes to our history, however, every Alumni and Undergraduate publications, especially our 100yrs, Anniversary Book, it states that ZBT was founded at Columbia University by 15 men from several NYC Colleges and Universities to organize the first secret society for Jewish men. Between 1898 and 1903 the society operation as a universal organization under a city charter with members from the following schools....Columbia, NYU, Yeshiva, CCNY, Baruch, Queens Coll., Brooklyn Coll., Long Island Univ., Hunter, etc. There was no Alpha chapter during that time, until 1903 when the society was changed to a Greek-Letter Fraternity and established the Grand Alpha Chapter at City College of NY. I hope this information helps clear up some of the confusion.

Since the first members were "from several New York City universities," and since the history doesn't say where they first met, I wonder if they first met at City College even though Gottheil was from Columbia. Just a guess.
