I don't think it's so much going out on a limb- when I heard Callie was "so sure" she would get into a certain chapter, I too was thinking that she was an ancestor of a founder for that chapter.

see, i thought it was just an overzealous PNM who would have her certainty crushed... but who knows, it seems like she committed a slew of rush faux-pas knowing that she had it in the bag anyway...

I agree with you on the overzealousness; I'm surprised by the extremes some people have gone to with their guessing!

Yeah, I guess in my experience (reading retro threads and my own recruitment) PNMs who have said stuff like "I'm definitely going XYZ" or "I know I'm going to get a bid to ABC" usually are just on their best behavior at the chapter during recruitment, making sure they are not crossing their legs (only their ankles), smiling a whole lot, and carrying good conversation. Then, as you said, many times they heart-breakingly get cut.

In this story, Callie runs into the house and says things to the actives like, "I can't wait to be your sister" or "I can't wait to live here!" as opposed to just saying these things to the PNMs. I guess that's the only difference I see. But it could still be sheer overzealous-ness.

All I can say is, I'm glad I didnt go to a school with alot of sororities, and I'm glad I am the first greek in my family. {Un}fortunately for any legacies I may have - I'm a founder of my chapter. I really really REALLY hope that they dont go through this Legacy CRAP. Being a legacy is great....if that's what the girl wants, but it really sucks for girls who want their homes to be elsewhere, and that chapter doesnt give them a chance, just BECAUSE they are a legacy. At the same time - that chapter - such as deer valley - doesnt really "have a choice" in who they pick, because they are practically being forced to give bids to legacies and legacies only.

Woohoo-join my chapter! your mom/aunt/sister/grandma was a member so you have to be too!

We were always so competitive about legacies, we rushed our own legacies hard and rushed other legacies even harder to make sure they saw another option outside of their legacy. There was certainly competition to "steal" legacies. Maybe that is because I am from a small greek system with only 4 chapters, I don't know.

Double legacies are always fun too, my chapter was so excited because last year they got a new member that was a legacy to DZ and another chapter on campus. Of course she was in house DZ, her sister was in chapter at the time but all the chapters rushed this girl hardcore.

Even though recruitment didn't refute it in her most recent post, I think I might retract my previous statement about agreeing with AlphaFrog about mom being a bigwig in whichever sorority. In her original post recruitment stated :

"our mother...tended to limit how much she did as an alumna of her sorority. remember that because it is one of the "twists" that makes this entire recruitment saga more comlicated."

I thought I remembered reading something to that effect so I went back and looked...and of course am now left wondering again.........drat.

that doesnt rule out the "mom being a bigwig" theory - maybe she was a head honcho back in the day and now just lays low on the local alum level, primping her youngings to becoming perfect legacy Aspens... or Deer Valleys, whatever.
