most of my things were family hand-me-downs, we couldnt afford it either, except for birthdays/christmas. we also had a Keds shoebox with pencils and markers, i think that is why to this day i love the smell of a fresh box of crayons...lol!
i also think that is why my parents spoil my daughter, and i do too. i still make her take days off to use her mind, like we did as the "poor kids"...turns out all that time we spent writing and drawing developed one hell of a talent for my sister, who won a full art scholarship 2 years ago...
SOOO i nominate a box of 64 count Crayola crayons with the built-in sharpener! and a nice fresh coloring book...

That's funny. When I was a kid (back in the 80's) we would invent our own icecreams. We took vanilla icecream and put crushed up twinkies or snickers in them. Where would we be if we had a marketing team?

Where did days go when you used to play "doctor"? Or was that just me and the lil' girl across the street? She helped shape my career choice as a child!

Clearly, my favorite throwback toys aren't real "toys" at all.
Someone gave us one of those old tape recorders--you know the ones with the handle. My sister and I used to have hours of fun taping ourselves! We had our own radio show!
My sister has always had a great singing voice and I would do back up by singing into a fan. I KNOW I'm not the only one!

We played all the made games but there was nothing better for a long car ride like (Nashville to New York every damn summer because flying was out of the question ) the green football game and the brown baseball game. The grandparents to the PSP and gameboy. I still have them both and my 8 year old thinks they are the best thing going. When I get off work I am going home and playing game.
Made up games: hide and go get it (all time favorite), Fly and the bounce, freeze tag, we also used to make bugs fight (going to shrink as we speak)

80's Baby
I loved my:
1:My original Nintendo (still remember the night my dad brought it home and set it up)
2:Black Cabage patch doll (original 1984 version w/ the nappy hair . . I got as a baby & still have it)
3: Skip it (elementary school)
But what I always (and still am bitter) about was the fact that at 4 or 5 I was too tall for the electronic Barbie convertable / jeep . . .the 1 that had the battery, gas pedal, and steering wheel to drive. I loooooved that toy and I wanted 1 sooo bad . No matter how hard my mom tried to explain that my "legs were just to long to fit" I would whine everytime we passed one in the store . . i still get excited when I see 1 now

I co-sign. There was nothing like a fresh coloring book. Sitting with my friends trying to spot who went outside the lines, even a lil bit...

I can support this statement 100%. We had active imaginations and always played in fantasy. I think that shaped my talent as a writer because I've always been able to let my imagination run free.
