Mom and dad can have their own financial problems when there's an illness in the family, or something in the house that needs to be immediately repaired, for instance. I personally know that can change quick and drastically.
Mom and dad might also have assumed they'd be getting reimbursed and weren't happy when they weren't. I've been in that situation as well.
