What I have learned from Greek Chat

What I have learned over the years, all of the above...the big three for me are...

"Greek Spirit" is tangible. The prayers when Mr Sageofages lay on a ventilator after his heartattack, the love shared when we where having troubles with Sageofages son #1 substance abuse following the heart attack (and his anger with god) and all the good wishes during Mr Sageofages recovery were felt STRONGLY. Greekchatters who I have never laid eyes on were there in such a big way, we truly are a community.

GLO's bring out the most in human behavior...the highest of ideals and sadly, the lowest of debasements. Our goal is to work together as a group to strengthen the highs and work to eliminate the lows. Together we GROW and together we fail, in the court of public relations.

There is a great community of people wanting to be part of this understanding of a bond of greek spirit. Sharing it with them is a special act of friendship and love, no matter how we meet them (formal recruitment, continuous open bidding, intake, AI, etc)

I learned from GC that discretion is nothing but a word; it is often preached but seldom practiced. It is often a misnomer to an extent, being that discretion is often confused with or equated to [non]DISCLOSURE.

* There are about half a bajillion GLO's that I have never ever heard of. (but as a result, have read up on a bit)

* It's taboo to actually post anything about actual chapters of actual GLO's. Especially in Rush stories.

* Everyone's chapter was the Big Dogs on their campus.

* The south is still very "South".

If the internet had existed when I was in college, I would be in deep doo-doo.

yeah... if i were left to my own devices (that is, my campus and letter sightings in the street) i wouldn't even know about 3/4th of the GC population's orgs.

i actually find it more admirable when someone can say "we werent the biggest or the baddest on campus but dammit we held our own and had a helluva time!" vs "OMG we were the best and if you didnt get a bid/invitation, your social life was over."

Amen to that. There are ups and downs, and just because you were a top dog "back in the day" it doesn't necessarily mean it's the same now (or vice versa!)

Both of these are SO true! I've found some of the most spectacular people to see me through a difficult problem, and witnessed some of the nastiest debacles, it's been a wild ride. I'm also amazed by the number of people who will lie about someone for their own agendas.

And I've found that I've had misconceptions about some GLOs (male and female), that ones I never really cared about before have some of the nicest people here on GreekChat. There's definitely good and not-so-good in every GLO!

* There are plenty of GLOs right in my own backyard that I never heard of (and that doesn't make them any more or less of a GLO).

* I've also learned from watching other people's mistakes. Too many lessons to list - how NOT to start out is the main one.

*I knew there were 26 other NPC sororities, but I learned TONS more about them from GC.

*I learned that recruitment is different at every school. I didn't know (for example) that suggested attire is different at different schools, that some schools ask that you have recs, and that some schools have skits and custom made pref dresses. I thought everyone's recruitment process was similar to my school's.

*I learned that at some schools, fraternities also have formal recruitment. My school had the typical informal style of fraternity recruitment, so I was pretty surprised by that.

*I learned that the internet is not as anonymous as people think. The things people have said here in their recruitment threads have actually affected the outcome of their recruitment.

I have learned these things (among many others)
*(as others have already mentioned) how different recruitment is at other schools

*about other sororities and fraternities that are in existence... i really had no idea about any other group except those at my campus...

*that people can be so helpful, thoughtful and considerate. When I posted about personal problems, questions about things with my sorority, someone was always there to help

*that people can be so incredibly close minded as well (but this is a very small amount)

i have learned the difference between MC/NPHC/NPC sororities
i have a respect and an admiration for greek life that i never would have had before, to the point where i now wish my school had an active greek system
i have learned all sorts of random trivia and pointers on how to behave, converse (on and offline) and dress that have actually served me well in the real world
i have learned the difference between no-frills and frills rush
i have learned that different regions do it differently
i have learned from others mistakes on this board and taken note

25 other NPC sororities :P

I've learnt that there are truly psychotic people out there. Also that reading comprehension appears to be at an all-time low.

i've learned that NPC sororities are so much more different than NPHC than i would have ever imagined. i thought that they basically had the same idea behind them, but it's apparently not that way. and as a disclaimer, i don't mean that as a put-down to either one. i've never had any extensive experience with either, but this rushing thing still kills me. i didn't realize it was like the stories i've read through GC.

1.)I've enjoyed learning so much about NPHC sororities.
2.) People sometimes have trouble on the internet understanding that a disagreement is not a personal attack.
3.) Many Greeks have a great sense of humor.
4.) Some do not.
5.) NPC recruitment has improved from when I was active and an advisor.
6.) That Panhellenic spirit is real, and empowering.

Oh yeah, that some people have a really loose definition of the TOS which makes it laughable when they try to use it against you.
