I knew they were used by hunters/campers- outdoor sportsmen type, - but I had never seen them toted by sorority girls before. My dad definitely had one he used for camping (and he doesn't drink alcohol) so it just seemed really out of place to me.

I love how there's all kinds of random crap in that photo...the scooter, trophy, paddles, flags, street sign. That's the kind of stuff my chapter did.

At U of I, we have barndances, and those are the favors for a lot of chapters.
And yes, a barndance is EXACTLY what it sounds like.

I was social chair for my chapter - those were quite popular. That's all I am gonna say. Except being Social Chair had it's priveledges!
They liked getting those - but I think the fav dance that I started back in 82 and they still use today is a barn dance call "Cow-Pi". We gave out cowboy hats then. This was just after Urban Cowboy.
Sorry for the hijack on favors!

My husband's fraternity had one every year, too. One year we had a pervert Picture Man. He told everybody to pick up their date in a "cradle", and that was everybody's "date picture". When the contact sheets came back we found out he had zoomed in on every girl's butt, so you could barely see your date and your face, but there were about a million shots of Levi's pockets front and center.
Thankfully my butt was only half the size it is now!

Just to continue down the off topic road we're on...
I think pretty much every fraternity and sorority at UIUC had a barn dance in the fall. They were completely awesome. It was a date party and we dressed in flannel and jeans and boots (if you had them) and we would take a bus to some real barn way out in the sticks. There would be a DJ or band and hay stacks to sit on. Sometimes there would be hayrides and bonfires. It was incredibly fun.

The campus where I advised had "Boonies" - parties held out in the sticks. Much the same as the barn dances.
