Sadly, this reminds me of something that I witnessed on my campus.
A girl went through rush who had a very recognizeable name. (I won't say it here for the sake of her privacy, but I'll just say that her great-grandfather started a business using the family name long ago and you'd all recognize her last name b/c of it.)
She preffed my chapter and another chapter on our campus that had the reputation of being the one that all the wealthy girls joined. This other chapter
really wanted her and assumed that we had no shot at her whatsoever. (Picture as though you had preffed Mike Williams and Frostee Rucker, instead of Mike Williams and Matt Leinart.)
Sooo...when she got a bid to my chapter, they automatically assumed something went wrong with bid matching. Someone from their chapter actually went so far as to contact her (
no, I'm not kidding) and tell her that they would make sure things got taken care of...she was the #1 person on their bid list, so there's no way that she should have gotten a bid to our house instead of theirs.
(I know that sounds unbelieveable, but I was on Panhel exec at the time and someone from that other chapter really did call the office to complain.
)
Anyhow, when she told them that she had ranked us first, they did not react kindly. Women in her dorm from that chapter who had been buddying up to her all year (she went through spring informal rush) suddenly stopped speaking to her, etc. God forbid that a desired PNM actually
choose a small chapter over a "top tier" one.
(She later told us that she ranked us first b/c she felt that we simply liked
her. She felt that the other chapter was just after her for her name to boost their reputation as the "wealthy girls" sorority.)
