Your grandmother is close to right, Jennie, and your professor is wrong, cg.
Z in German is pronounced "ts" (like in Mozart) so that it's ALTS-highm-ers. (The
z and the
h would be in two different syllables -- Alz-heim-ers.)
At least, based on standard German pronunciation, that is probably how Herr Doktor Alois Alzheimer said it.
