Did anyone here attend a "British style" private school?

I however, went to private school K-9 and public school rest of HS. When my son gets to jr high if i have to take 3 jobs he is going there because the public school system as it is sucks big time!

a friend of mine went to a british style board school in Canada. She has since sent her daughters there too. Cannot be that bad if you in turn send your kids there from your own exp.

My husband went to a "Public school" in the UK. He went to Canford which is in the southern part of England. He was a day boy there, but most of his friends lived in houses. We are still making the 50th birthday party rounds for Canford boys and I'm amazed at how close they still are. He also went to Forres (sp) another boarding school before Canford, where the older boys were allowed to strike the younger ones. Canford is amazing. An American identified a Syrain artifact in the Tack room which was worth a fortune. I think it is funny that an American would recognize something that had been overlooked by so many well respected intellectuals.

Wow, this is an old thread. I'm surprised I missed it the first time around.

My mother lived in England when she was a teenager. Her high school had houses, much like Hogwarts. She was a prefect. She was probably her school's version of Hermione...

Yes I went to Private school. And by private, I mean public and by public I mean the US version of public. Sorry no houses. Uniforms and a headmaster though.

Also cool is that Bristol was the first university in England to admit women on equal footing with men. If ever a sorority wanted to found in the UK, I recommend this one.

heh, I'm starting my masters at the University of Glasgow in September! I love the crest as well. When I got my offer, they even sent me a little lapel pin of it .



when I was living in Belfast, the "college" thing threw me off so much! I'd tell people I'm in college, and then have to tell them that it means university. They didn't get the majors thing either until I reexplained it. The school uniforms thing blew their minds too. When I told them that I could wear whatever I wanted every single day, they were SHOCKED. They actually prefer their uniforms, and take great pride in their blazers (the trim and stitching denotes ranks and awards...it's like a varsity jacket).

and it reminds me of Hogwarts as well..the university is 557 years old, second oldest in Scotland (after St. Andrews...there's a GC'er who goes there as well)...the main building is beautiful, and it houses the oldest museum in Scotland.

Uniforms rule. Seriously, they don't suck like uniforms in the US and you don't get up each day and worry about how you'll be judged in your clothes-just your bag, your shoes, your coat...there are still cliques but it's slightly easier when you're wearing a uniform. The mindlessness of a uniform at 7 in the morning is a blessing, I can assure you.

My mother went to St. Andrews for medical school. I've visited the campus, and it is beautiful.

When we took the campus tour at Hahvahd, the guide was all proud of the fact that Hahvahd was founded around 17-something-or-other. My mother broke out in laughter, and then informed the guide that she'd attended a university that was founded in 1411 by papal bull. That shut the guide up...

Glasgow, St. Andrews and Aberdeen were all founded by Papal Bull. Glasgow alumns feel a special rivalry with St. A's, but even moreso with Edinburgh because they are so close.

I went to Peddie, but it is in no way modeled after the British 'Private' system, which BTW is the same as 'public' on the US. Public school in the UK is the exclusive circle we try to achieve with our 'private' schools.
