They discourage the cross-promoting at my school. Women would listen to the fraternity guys more than they would the sorority women or their own instincts. And the sororities at that time were wearing buttons and things for the fraternities, too.
Maybe at a big school it's not as much a big deal, but on smaller campuses, it creates way too much gossip and too many labels. Besides, once one chapter does it, the others all get in on the action, too...why create competition and hostility like that if it's not necessary?
