Ah, The Fez!

I couldn't figure out what it was, or would have been used for - until now. That auction for the fez is, to me, priceless no matter who ends up buying it. The pictures are great.

Who knew there was such a thing as a Lambda Chi Alpha fez pin?

In ZAX,
Jono
Brothers,

This is one of my Lambda Chi "Holy Grails!"

I am bidding on it. I might get out bid, but I am ready for the contest....

I thought that the Lambda Chi Fez was green based on some reading I did a few years ago.

At the time I was gathering information for an article concerning Lambda Chi oddities like the potato, the official funeral/memorial ritual, the official funeral wreath, and the official TKN cornerstone laying ceremony.

I now think that I am wrong about green. It was probably purple like the one offered on eBay.

Recently I read some articles about the origin and history of the Fez. I learned that the green fez is reserved in the Islamic world for the descendants of Mohamed. It is unlikely that an authentic green Fez would be readily available for sale on a wide scale or in large numbers for an organization.

The Fez pictured on eBay matches well with the Fez in the classic Cole group photograph found on page 101 in the current Paedagogus.

It is hard to say how many were produced or what company made them.

If I win, I will wear the Fez at the Centennial General Assembly in 2009!

Yours in ZAX,

Mike Raymond, Z-U Zeta

P.S. I already have a glass display case for the Fez! Right now, the display case sits empty under my framed Gamma Plate and next to Warren A. Cole's personal copy of our original history book.

Ah, The Fez!

As a history buff myself, this certainly does look like quite the find! Very cool.

Well, Brother Raymond, I hope you get it!

So with this item, what do you plan for it?

Never mind, I already know as I also know you!

If you need a little loan just do it!

I really cannot see it on My Head!

docroc,

You've clearly purchased more things on eBay than I have. I usually wait until the last second to bid. What do you see as the benefit of upping the bid during the week?

(I hope you win it too!)

Greetings,

This is a very good question for which I have no good answer!

I use different strategies based on the competition. I know a good number of the "regulars" and bid this way (early and often) to signal my intentions. They know me and my habits too!

I also watch for how the other bidders increase their bids. This gives me a feel for how committed they are to getting the item in question.

Small bid increases generally mean low interest or low finances. Most drop off before the end of bidding. I also note the bidders who don't respond with a higher bid...potential "snipers!"

Sometimes I try to pressure other bidders into bidding high on something I don't really want in order to win something else we are competing against each other to buy. They "tap out" on one and I get the one I really want!

In many cases I lose simply because I am at work, asleep, or doing something else that prevents me from "sniping" at the last second. However, I "snipe" from time to time.

If I really want something I put up my best bid and just let the bidding unfold.

The reality is that I follow no set pattern. I don't think that there is just one way to win on eBay.

I like the hunt, the give and take, and the fun of winning. I win about 66% of what I bid on and lose about 10% of what I bid on by design.

This means that about 25% of the time I really get "bent out of shape" by eBayers who are crafty, smarter, richer, or who require less sleep than me!

I can't say it is all fun. I would like to win at the lowest price possible. But that would mean that no one would bid against the first bidder and eBay, a very profitable enterprise, would go out of business.

In turn, that would mean that I would have to start going back to the auction and garage sale curcit... no thanks!

Like I said, great question... not much of an answer.

Best Wishes,

Mike Raymond

Scares people that snipe away...

Don't worry - I've recently come into some money. This is my notice that
I am placing a $1000 bid when there is 8 seconds left. I don't plan on
paying that much, but I want to ensure that I get the hat.

Toodles...

For 5 dollars, after I buy the hat I'll video tape myself setting it
on fire while wearing it...then I'll submit it to youtube and collegehumor.
I'll be an internet superstar.

Note: Alcohol might be involved.
