Why is that a no no? Sometimes the green used, originally called olive green by Warren Cole, is too dark to read the mottoes on the banners.

I've used a brush on enamel called "Garden Green", which is a nice balance. Comes in a glass jar, by plasti-kote.

Purples are tough. Very easy to get too blue or too red. You want a "royal purple". Might have to play with that one.
