To make sure it's easy for your friends when you're saving... look down at the file type and click save as word 2003 file (or something similar)
The idea is that once you learn the new way things work it'll be OMG TEH AWESOME. But I haven't played with it, and I don't like my things to change either.

Tell your family and friends to check with their offices, if they work. I bought Microsoft Office for $20 through a work-related deal, with the stipulation that I'm supposed to remove it from my computer at home if I leave my current place of employment.
I mainly wanted it for Excel -- I detest using MS Word -- but anyway you look at it, it was a deal.

Listen to this geek here. Change the extension on your doc files when saving them in MSWord 2007 to word 2003 because most people have not upgraded yet and won't be able to read the original saved file. I had to do some quick resaving when I emailed a paper to my professor last year.

Why thank you, I like it myself
This was actually after he told us NOT to send them in MSworks format. OOPS. I swore I converted it. And I probably did, then I just sent the original. Oh well, he was a TA and took it anyway

Got it. thank you!
I vaguely remember seeing something like that when I was saving it. And I did notice all the files types now say docx or xlsx. But seriosuly, it's stupid. Why would I buy a new version just to save in the old format? I so don't get computers....

Because soon everyone ELSE will have the new version It's a reason why I wait a while before upgrading. That and I'm poor.
As for student versions, check through you school, they usually offer a discount. Something like 75 for Office and that sort of thing. I haven't checked about 07 though.
