Abortion was the fad at my middle school and teen clique pregnancies (girls in the same crew planning their pregnancies at the same time) were the fad at my high school. We're talking '88-'95 so nothing here is new or shocking.
The article is from London so this may be something new for them. As someone stated, teen pregnancy is no longer the "epidemic" that it once was in the U.S.
Also, it's "new" when people start talking about middle class whites and not the lower class whites, blacks, and Hispanics that people "expect" this type of thing from.

mmm...no. Not new. I told my mother about this article and she rolled her eyes and said "like they invented it."
Teen pregnancy rates in the UK are very high. It's worth pointing out the source of this article again...the Daily Mail. A fine, upstanding tabloid that no one in their right mind respects.

I don't know what reputable UK sources are.
The question I thought you were going to answer is how "old" is this epidemic in the UK? Your mother's comment doesn't answer that for me and neither does the fact that their pregnancy rates are very high.

I think half, if not 75% of the girls who are deliberately getting pregnant under the age of 18 are doing it because 1) they want to be loved by something, although a baby has absolutely NO WAY of showing you it's "love" 2) they think it's cool to be pregnant. 3) they assume that mommy and daddy will just "take care" and "help out financially" and "let me still be a teenager" (which don't get me wrong most parents probably do my coworker is a perfect case in point.
I love watching Maury when these girls come on. They just think that having a baby will be so much "fun" and that the baby will just [i]instantanously{/i] love them. Then of course they get a major reality check when 1) the boot camp dude yells at them and 2) they are stuck with babie, all under the age of 1, for 24 hours and they haven't got any idea how to even change a diaper. Too bad we can't do that all the time for stupid 14 year olds who want to get pregnant and rely on the rest of society to take care of their "lovely" child.

Also they seem to miss the fact that babies don't remain babies. They can't look ahead and see that after a year and some change they'll be running around after toddlers, and at 30 years old they'll be raising teenagers.

I'll be 28 in 3 weeks and their is NO WAY IN HELL I could imagine raising a teenager right now!
Plus, just thinking about I know my life wouldn't be the same. I'd probably still be working on my undergrad, not starting my second masters.

Add to the list: "The baby's daddy is going to be in the NBA/NFL/Pro something or other/Rapper/etc so I'm going to ensure I have some money and never have to work."
I've had at least two girls tell me that to my face...not even counting other stories from other teachers.

This is a topic that comes up every couple of months on another forum that I post on. Apparently teens that get pregnant (out of wedlock) in England receive something known as a “council house.” Basically if you think American Taxpayers get screwed over on teen pregnancy lets just say that European welfare programs defiantly go above and beyond.

Well, my mother was a teenager in the late 60s, early 70s and she saw it then. Sex ed is a mixed bag in England...sometimes I felt I learnt more from my teen mags than school.

I really don't care about Maury Povich and who's my baby's daddy today because I'm 12 years old and I wanna be a teenager...
My concern comes in when kids are having sex without a condom and the risk of HIV/AIDS starts being a factor among many other issues.
And Gardisil takes 3 injections spaced out...
So these little girls, because that's what they are when they fcukin' do these things, practically ruin their lives for some facade fairytale that doesn't exist in this reality.
And the tax paying society has to pay for that crap...
You wanna see breakdown, one look a Britney Spears bald-headed psychoses tells you homegirl is having post-partum...
Raging hormones are abound in teens. What makes us think that the post-partum psychosis would not be different?
That's why it is unhealthy for extremely young women to be pregnant and have children.
But hayle, I have anscestors and cousins that were pregnant at 12...

Thanks. So she saw it "happen" or was it happening in large percentages back then?

I don't believe the percentages were as high, but she said she used to walk home from school and pass a home for unwed mothers where there would be about 15-16 babies in the house at anytime.
