Mariah Carey Had 'Breakdown,' Her Publicist Says
08.01.2001 4:30 PM EDT
The "extreme exhaustion" that led to Mariah Carey's hospitalization last week was actually "an emotional and physical breakdown," her publicist said Wednesday (August 1).

Carey was in the midst of promoting her new album, Glitter, and the movie of the same name when she checked herself into a hospital last Wednesday night. She is undergoing psychiatric care, publicist Cindi Berger said.

A press release sent out last week by Berger's company, PMK, suggested that the pace of filming two movies and making an album caused Carey to become exhausted (see "Mariah Carey Hospitalized For 'Extreme Exhaustion'"). Before her breakdown, Carey broke some glasses and dishes in a hotel room, and "may have cut her foot" unintentionally, according to Berger. She declined to speculate on when Carey might be released. "I'm trying to understand things in life right now and so I really don't feel that I should be doing music right now," Carey said in a despondent voice message left on her official Web site before she checked into the hospital.

Glitter, Carey's first album for Virgin Records, is due in stores August 21, while the movie is scheduled for August 31 release.

Carey has canceled all public appearances, including a planned headlining performance Wednesday night at MTV's "MTV20: Live and Almost Legal."

While juggling a video shoot, a recording session and a whirlwind publicity schedule in May, Carey told MTV News that the non-stop pace was getting to her.

"I'm honestly really, really delirious and stressed out and overworked and doing too much," she said. "I haven't slept in like two weeks and that's an important detail for you to know."

If she hadn't been so busy, Carey said, she'd be "crying on the floor."

"It's an insane time in my life. It's crazy," she said. "Everything is going on like really fast. Everyone from my manager to everybody that's with me, we're all a bunch of freaks right now because we're trying really hard to make this deadline and just really get everything together."

Carey added, however, that she was excited about her future as an actress and as a singer with a new label.

"Everything that I'm doing is a crazy bunch of stuff going on," she said. "But it's also an amazing time in my life because it's a fresh new happy situation."

See ya, later!

It seems that Virgin Records isn't willing to support Mariah.

She had signed a $80 million/4 album deal with the label. The "Glitter" album was the first of the four. After all of her "issues" Virgin has decided to BUY Mariah out of her contract and are willing to pay her 50 MILLION dollars.

Dayum!

I can not stand Mariah Carey...I liked a few of her songs and even will listen to them but she makes me sick. I am not fond of people who are conveniently black. NO I am not saying she should not claim whateva else she is but do so all the time not just when you want to sell a record to a certain community. She seems so sleazy to me. I just have never gotten great vibes about her. She makes my skin and flesh crawl and my blood boil. Never have I disliked anyone so much. I can't even quite put my finger on it. That's enough about her and before any body comments about my dislike for this woman remember this is just my opinion.

I couldnt agree with you more. I liked her when she first came out, because I thought she had a beautiful voice. But now she just looks like a cheap stripper...and doesnt even sing anymore. She just moans and groans...Most of her songs I cant understand 90% of what she is singing...just sing the words!

I heard that Virgin was dropping her.

I guess they just couldn't stant the irony of her being on a label called "Virgin"....

Sorry, had to go for the cheap shot.

But anyway, I really hope that she gets better. Her songs were really good back in her heyday, and it'd be nice to see a return to the classy young lady she appeared to be (God knows we have few enough of those).
