I really think it works - maybe it's that last bit of "showing interest." When I called, I said "Hi, this is GeekyPenguin, I'm an applicant for this fall. I've been hearing from a few schools lately and there are some deadlines coming up, but I'd really like to be able to give XXX Law the consideration it deserves."
They didn't need to know all I had were rejections.
