"Dreamgirls," the first musical sensation since "Chicago" in 2002, will expand to about 1,800 screens on Jan. 12.
Ya'll didn't know they are not showing it everywhere? I heard the guy on the radio say last week that Dreamgirls is not doing well. I though "if you read the whole story, you will know that they are not showing it in all theaters". There's not even 10 theaters that are showing it in SC. I guess releasing it more in theaters on King's weekend will draw more folks.

Interesting stuff on that Wikipedia site. I really think Jennifer Holiday's bitter that everyone else from the play has had sucessful careers and not her. Even the person who was orginally suppose to pay Effie (Nell Carter-RIP) had a decent career.

I don't know about these "reports" that it's NOT doing well. The movie made $9m in ONE day( I believe). Was that not good? That was opening day. Plus, how many movies are released on a Monday? Mostly Friday, maybe a Wednesday. So, that gave the movie time to make up for the limited screens available.

I remember when I made my initial post, I could not find too many articles about the numbers. I guess that was because it was still Christmas or the day after. Orrrrrr, was it because the movie had done well? If one movie was released widely; while another one was released with limited screens, can you really compare them?

I'm sure the movie has made a profit for the film company, Dreamworks. Has the film been released overseas? I'm sure it will do well.

*I mentioned to my sister while in line if there was going to be some controversy around the ticket sales. Remember what happened when Waiting to Exhale was released? True ticket sales were not reported by some theaters. *

Not doing well? I just saw it in Vancouver - a city that only has a 0.9% Black population - and it was SOLD OUT. Now, if it can sell out here in one of the palest cities in North America, surely it can do better in the US?

Re: the rolling release dates - typically the industry releases certain movies in limited release just so they can qualify for Oscar consideration. Dreamgirls was released in NY and LA December 15, in larger cities on Christmas day, and will see wider release in Jan. It really isn't that unusual to see this happen.

I was thinking the same thing a little while ago as I was watching CNN's Year as You Saw it a little while ago. The little ticker tape running at the bottom of the screen had Ben Stiller's movie, Night at the Museum at #1, The Pursuit of Happyness at #2, and Dreamgirls at #3. I believe that if it had been released everywhere, it would have easily been #1.

I saw the movie and absolutely LOVED it. While the media is trying to say this is Beyonce's movie, it is clearly Jennifer Hudson's movie. I went with my mom and cousin and they both said the same thing. I see great things happening for J. Hudson.
