Don't sleep. If I can find one, I'll post one. When I was teaching I used to show a documentary entitled, "Small Steps, Big Strides." It was the history of blacks in entertainment beginning with white folks "portraying" black folks in black face to Denzel Washington. It is excellent. I wonder how Flav would feel if he actually sat down to watch it. Would her have any shame? Probably not. He hasn't had his "Dave Chapelle Moment" yet.

Sorry for the HIJACK!

What grade or level were you teaching? Did the students catch on? Were they affected?

[QUOTE=DSTCHAOS;1348475]So? He's doing his thing. Does it automatically make a black person a coon or a sambo just because they are doing something against the grain or something that you deem ignorant? If so, then you're conforming to white folks' labels.

Why can't Flav just be an eccentric, old ass man who plays up some of the more outlandish parts of his personality to make that paper?

He can be and he certainly is.

coon n 1: an eccentric or undignified rustic; "I'll be a gone coon when the battle starts" 2: (ethnic slur) offensive name for a Black person; "only a Black can call another Black a nigga" [syn: nigger, nigga, spade, jigaboo, nigra]

buffoon n 1: a rude or vulgar fool [syn: clown] 2: a person who amuses others by ridiculous behavior [syn: clown, merry andrew]

So as long as people take the "black" out of coon and use it to refer to people of all races who do what he does, I'm cool.

I was teaching 10th grade African American Literature. There was a unit in ou text book entitled, "Blacks in Entertainment". We began by watching the documentary and studied the history from "Birth of a Nation" to "Glory". Trust me, they got it. They were required to do an oral presentation in which they selected one person/group from a list of entertainers. The catch was that the list did not include current performers such as Halle Berry or Denzel Washington. They had to choose from a list that included Oscar Micheaux, The Nicholas Brothers, Freddie Washington, Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte, Nina Mae Mckinney, Hattie McDaniel, etc...

They learned a lot and enjoyed it as well. I have to say that was my favorite unit.

I see your point here. I'll take to being enlightened by someone who doesn't see the hilarity of pre-"Chappelle Show" Dave. Either way, Flav is Flav is a coon is a buffoon is Flav.

I know. My nappy red twistouts are always a sign of my conforming and bending easier than a limp noodle to white folks' notions.

I have to say I love you for that unit! "Birth of a Nation", too? Wow...

They couldn't even mention 50 Cent... I could almost hear a child saying, "Come on, Ms. AKADIVA12! 50 revolutionized rap! He got shot 9 times! He made money out of being a victim! Who else could do that???"

Honestly, I could care less what other people do. They don't have the same issues that we do. Jim Carey is a buffoon to the tenth power, but somehow his buffonery doesn't have the same effect. White people aren't viewed collectively as blacks are.

Unfortunately when people utilize the term "coon", they're not referring to anyone else, just black folks. Is it fair? Not really. But it is what it is.

Okay, I have heard students say that about 50 Cent. LOL. Were you in my class?

Well, honestly, some blacks would define your nappy red twistouts as an eccentric form of blackness, therefore "coonery," and see you as conforming to white folks' notions of blackness.

OK...I'm sad that the children came up with that or were brainwashed by some media outlets.

It's true.

Now get off the desk before you make the world think that all black women have nappy red twistouts and stand on desks.
