I proof-read my message but didn't catch that I said bids there...thanks for the explanation irishpipes!

I know my grades are way above the panhellenic minimum, but I'm wondering if some sororities have their own minimum GPA requirement? I know that some of the houses on campus love to talk about how good their members' grades are, so I wouldn't be surprised if they had some sort of a personal GPA standard. Does that happen at all?
At my school, the GPA requirements range from 2.0-3.0. The majority of the sororities require at least a 2.5. I'm not sure how your school is, but from what I understand, the first day cuts are most often made for grades. If you have a 2.75 or above, I say you'd be in good shape. Good luck to you and can't wait to hear more of your story!

That's a bigger thing with deferred rush in the south. Heck, even I went through only knowing a couple people and I got into a chapter in Texas. You should be fine at IU.

Don't worry so much. Have fun.

Good Luck during recruitment! Don't worry about being a sophomore too much...I can't speak for your school, but I know there were a considerable amount of sophomores going through formal recruitment...infact, there are 3 sophomores in my pledge class this year!

12 Party

Hi! Sorry but last night I crashed after our rho gam meeting. It was definitely the longest day of my life so far! We had to get up really early to meet our rho gamma to get our list of which houses we were invited back to. I got 11 houses back, which is really good when compared to the average amount of returns girls usually get.
I got back Jazzberry Jam, Burnt Sienna, Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown, Bittersweet, Wild Watermelon, Laser Lemon, Cerulean, Mac-n-Cheese, Banana Mania, Cerise, and Mango Tango.

12 party is skit day. The dress: dress pants, cute top, and heels. Weather forecast: rain rain rain rain rain. Ewwwww

So here was my day in a nutshell:

Jazzberry Jam had a good skit and the girls I talked to were nice. This is one where I can possibly see myself being in this sorority but I just didn’t get the warm fuzzies that I got at other houses.

Burnt Sienna was so much fun and I had great conversations with the girls, even some that I had talked to during 19 Party. This house is definitely in my top favorites.

I feel so uncomfortable at Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown still. I have awkward talks and I just don’t feel any connection with the girls here.

Bittersweet is another house that I can just tell is not for me. I was surprised to see they asked me back. I don’t really know how to explain it, I just really feel that it’s not a good match.

Wild Watermelon was a surprise. I didn’t really remember them from 19 Party and really liked them today! Very funny skit and the girls were really nice. This house is near the top of my list.

Laser lemon is a toss-up. The girls are so sweet but again I’m not feeling that little spark. They’re very middle-of-the-road for me because I seem to forget them once I leave. I’d like to go back and learn more about them though.

Cerulean is my absolute favorite house. I loved everything about them and their skit was really funny too! I just feel so at home already with the girls I talk to and I can see myself being a part of this sorority.

I didn’t like Mac-n-cheese any more than I did at 19 Party. Again, I just know it’s not a good match for me. I feel like I am so different from the other girls in the house and the conversations felt forced.

I have to admit by the time Banana Mania rolled around I was in a real sleepy slump. I think I didn’t feel as good about this house because of how tired I was. I didn’t give it my all yet the girls were still fabulously sweet and very down-to-earth.

Cerise was again very impressive. I really like the girls I’ve talked to and I love their house! This house is definitely still in the top part of my list.

I had hoped my impression of Mango Tango would change from 19 Party but again I felt pretty uncomfortable. It didn’t help that I was double rushed, which makes it harder to talk with the sorority member. Again, I kept noticing how different I was from the girls.

At the end of the super long day these are the rankings I turned in:

Cerulean
Burnt sienna
Cerise
Wild Watermelon
Jazzberry jam
Laser lemon
Banana mania
Mango tango
Mac-n-cheese
Fuzzy wuzzy brown
Bittersweet

I know I’m a day behind so I’m going to get to work on writing about my 6 Party day for all the rush thread addicts out there. I must be driving you crazy right now! I might wait until the morning to post the details from today just to break things up a bit. Who knows

6 Party

Hello hello hello! And then there were six… … … yep! I got back six houses for 6 Party, which made me really happy. I got back Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown, Bittersweet, Cerulean, Banana Mania, Laser Lemon, and Mac-n-cheese. I was really shocked to see that Burnt Sienna and Cerise hadn’t invited me back, but I stayed calm by reminding myself that I still had my favorite, Cerulean. Apparently a lot of girls didn’t take it as well as I did, though, because many didn’t show up after reading their lists!

Those lovely people who made the recruitment schedule decided to give us gals a break today by starting the first party at eleven (big yay!!!) The schedule was:

11:00 – 12:00 Cerulean
12:20 - 1:20 Banana Mania
1:40 – 2:40 Mac-n-cheese
Lunch (aka naptime)
4:30 – 5:30 Laser lemon
5:50 – 6:50 Bittersweet
7:10 – 8:10 Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown

6 party is slide-show/video day. The dress: skirt, cute top, and heels. Weather forecast: rain rain rain rain rain. Ewwwww again!

Oh I forgot to mention that if any of you knows anything about the location of the houses at IU, 20 minutes is NOT enough time to get from house to house, especially in heels and double especially in the rain! (Cue blisters and frizzy hair)

So Cerulean: I was sooo excited to see that I was invited back here! I had a great long talk with one of the members and then we watched a slide show and listened to the sisters sing that had everyone in tears! You can tell the girls genuinely love and care for one another here. I cannot get over how comfortable and natural I feel at this house.

I’ve had mixed feelings about Banana Mania but after today I’m really starting to feel more solid about this house. These girls are so down-to-earth and you can tell that they have a blast together. They also had a touching video. I’m starting to think that I’ll be seeing a lot of tears at every house I visit today!

My last house before lunch was Mac-n-Cheese. I haven’t had positive experiences here the past two parties so I tried to give them another chance today, I can honestly say I do not feel like I fit in at this house. I also don’t feel a connection with the girls I’ve talked to unlike other houses.

After an extremely short-feeling break was Laser Lemon. This house visit is the reason why I’m so glad I’ve stayed throughout all the parties. I didn’t know exactly how I felt about this house before, but after today I really love them! I had fabulous conversations and can tell that the girls are really genuine here. I can see myself being a part of this sisterhood, which I couldn’t imagine before today.

Bittersweet and Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown have been my least favorites throughout recruitment. These last two houses just aren’t natural-feeling for me. After having visited other houses I can tell that I just don’t feel the same way as I do about my favorites. I know what it’s like to feel completely comfortable in a house and I’ve only felt awkward during these visits.

Today was an easy ranking to turn in:

Cerulean
Laser Lemon
Banana Mania
Mac-n-Cheese
Bittersweet
Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown

I am so nervous for tomorrow’s Preference Round/3 Party that I can’t fall asleep! Assuming I get 3 houses back, I won’t have my first party until 1:00 pm. I’m so anxious and excited and nervous!!! And I cannot wait to wear my dress which is adorable!!!! AAAH I’m going to try and sleep now (… … not going to happen … …)

Congratulations and best wishes.

Did everyone else catch the coincidence? The chapter house pictured in the article mentioned below is Alpha Gamma Delta!

Something else a little special for <3pinky<3 -- I think 2007 is the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the AGD chapter at Indiana. If that's right, pinky and her sisters will probably have some very special events and ceremonies (and work) to remember for life.

Even funnier is that I'm in the picture (but you can't see me.) I remember the photographer there and I can see my jacket!

You are correct! Beta Delta was installed October 11, 1947 so this year's definitely an anniversary year!

Sorority recruitment ends in smiles
Bid day concludes process as sisters greet new members

by Michelle Manchir
Indiana Daily Student

Published Monday, January 8, 2007

Freshman Lucy Rodriguez beamed as she stood among her new sisters in matching navy and gray hooded sweat shirts upon the steps of Delta Gamma on Sunday afternoon.

"I couldn't be more excited," she said, clasping her fingers.

Rodriguez was one of more than 800 women who received invitations to be members of one of the 19 Panhellenic Association sorority chapters at IU.

The women's recruitment process, which began in early December with 19-Party, concluded this weekend with first and second invite on Friday and Saturday and, finally, bid day on Sunday.

"It's a long process," said Rodriguez, who said she had witnessed crying throughout the week from other pledging women on her floor in McNutt Quad. "But mostly everyone was happy."

After the freshman and sophomore pledges received their invitations in their dorm rooms Sunday, they boarded double-decker buses to their respective houses. Awaiting them were their new sisters, armed with sweat shirts, hugs and sometimes rehearsed cheers.

Panhellenic Assocation's Vice President of Recruitment Kelly Jones, a senior, said recruitment started out with more than 1,600 women signed up. She said many drop out of the process on their own accord, failing to enjoy what they encounter while visiting the chapters during 19-Party. Others drop out because they don't meet the GPA requirements, which vary from house to house.

Jones also acknowledged that not all women who complete the recruitment process receive a bid.

A woman is chosen for a particular house when both the individual and sorority "preference" one another during first and second invite parties. Both the sororities and potential recruits rank their choices, and a chapter's picks must match each individual woman's for her to be invited back for the next round.

Alpha Phi President Kait Behan, a junior, said her chapter recruited 47 new members, one more than last year. Like her peers, she expressed excitement but felt the effects of missing out on sleep from the long weekend.

"My voice sounds like a man right now," she said. "It was worth it. We were so happy with every girl we got."

Jones compared the recruitment weekend to being part of a "three-day long interview."

"It does take a lot of time but it gives (prospective new members) the chance to experience all the houses," she said.

After being greeted on the houses' lawns, new recruits were invited inside for reintroductions and photographs, but also to learn their obligations for the rest of the semester. While new recruits don't move into the houses until next school year, they must attend pledge-class meetings.

Rodriguez is looking forward to the semester with her newfound friends.

"It makes a big campus seem a lot smaller," she said.
