As to why, most HBO shows don't go longer than 5 seasons. Longer than that, a lot of the actors wouldn't be able to advance to other things. That's just my speculation though.

David Simon actually planned for the show to last 5 seasons. He said in an interview that if HBO had not picked up the 5th season he wanted to write a book about it. Even if he hadn't, I am sure most of the actors, especially the black actors, would not be worried about advancing to other things. It's not like the Michael K. Williams' (Omar) of the world are being sought after for roles other than "Street Thug #2" on most shows.
I was literally depressed last night because the Wire was not on. there was not even Flavor of Love to make me feel a bit better! LOL
