When I first got my driver's license, my mom told me that she had no doubt that I was a safe and cautious driver. It was all the bad people out there that could harm me that she was worried about.
Applying that to letting kids go off on their own vacations, I don't see how any parent in their right mind could do such a thing. Unfortunate things can happen to you no matter how much you play it smart.
