Everything you have typed applies to sororities as well as fraternities. At least the sororities that I'M familiar with do a lot of the same things fraternities do during pledging and hazing rituals. Lineups, pushups, etc. Doesn't make it right or legal but (like I always say) what's good for the goose is always good for the gander.

If "hazing" is necessary for fraternities it is necessary for sororities. No point in sorority women baking cookies and making pledge gifts when fraternity men are "in the trenches."

This has become a dumb thread. People who haven't gone through a pledgeship like we have simply won't understand. Let them do what they will, its not like our greek systems are suffering down here...

Yeah, so I'm pretty sure Arkansas' rush numbers have gone up every year. What have yours done?

I think this is a good topic, but then again I don't really think anyone's posts are bad, but I agree with you as far as pledging is concerned. You're right.

Auburn's have been great. Nobody gets hurt, and yet we somehow seem to create one of the best greek systems in the country, similar to other southern universities. Its amazing, in spite of the evil that is "hazing," people keep going through rush. Its crazy man, i tell you.

When you say no one gets hurt do you me like hostpitalized or something similar? I mean I think a pledgee should have to go through some things, nothing life threatening, but things happen when things get heated.

We had a few pledges go to the ER while I was there, but it wasn't for alcohol or getting beat up or anything. We're guys, we do things that can injure, it happens regardless of "hazing."

No it doesn't apply to both. Hazing does not accomplish the same goals psychologically to females as it does to males in my opinion. That is why it is not necessary in sororities. We "haze" for a purpose, not just to haze.

Been there, done that.

It's kinda funny, because when I joined the Fraternity there were a lot of good things about what they did, but while I was being pledged, there was quite a bit of hazing. Some "good" some "bad." Whatever that means these days. Nevertheless, I went through it and decided that it didn't really do the things people claim. It was just a way for people to exercise power.

So when I became DP, I began "hazing" my way. If pledges didn't finish a project on time, they were "punished" with 5 hours of community service through the Boys and Girls Club. This is just one example. It became less about "testing" people and more about just getting to know them as individuals. Only then could I tell if they were right for the Brotherhood.

As someone who's been through it, I can say that I'm glad I got rid of it at my chapter's educational process, because now we have Brothers that are committed to Community Service and respecting themselves and the Fraternity, all without pushups, degredation or menial household tasks.

As a result we are now one of the largest Fraternities of our kind at our campus.

That's the best way to change how we induct and initiate new members, from the inside, because rules and regulations, unfortuantely don't work.

Quote from a DP - "The purpose of an eduaction process is to build Brotherhood and respect, but it's also to ensure the livelihood of the Fraternity. At the end of the pledge process, if all of the Big Brothers were to magically disappear from the Fraternity, you and your class should have the knowledge and abilities to effectively run the chapter. If you can't do that by the end of this process, then this process needs to be torn down and built back up the RIGHT way."
