If you can, wear flip flops. It'll speed up going through security by a few minutes since you won't have to take your shoes off.

I've had to take my flip-flops off in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Boston. Apparently my Havianas look suspicious.

Wow. I have never had to do that in JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, or the Dominican Republic. That's crazy. You can pack so much explosive material into those straps...

Ummm, I just did it last weekend at Laguardia, and at Atlanta. Apparently, the rubber freaks out the walk-through x-ray machines.
Hey, Candice...if you want more Havaianas, my Brazilian grocery store sells them for $8/pair. They're legit, too.

OMG are you serious? Candice may be needed to place an order with you. Candice is planning on wearing her Havianas until it starts snowing in MinneCambridge, because she's crazy like that.
I still like wearing flip-flops when I fly even if I have to take them off because they're much easier to get back on than other shoes.

I don't know if this is an option for you, but I highly recommend half an Ambien (half of a 10 mg pill) or a valium before take off. If you need to go the over-the-counter route, try some Tylenol PM.
All of the above take off the edge and make the flight a little bit more bearable.

I agree with this.
I live on an island so I have no choice but to fly. I'm used to flying, but take off and the few moments right after still drive me nuts. Before I fly I usually pay a visit to the doc, who'll prescribe me Ambien (Valium always makes me feel like shee-it when I wake up), and when I'm flying to the west coast (at least 5 hours), I take a whole pill. I feel fine when I land.

*Most problems and anxiety can be avoided if you get to the airport EARLY.
*DO NOT FORGET YOUR ID. I REPEAT: DO NOT FORGET YOUR ID. You will need to show ID at least 3 different times before you get on the plane (checking in, going through security, boarding the plane).

I saw you're flying AirTran, and I flew with them from the DC area about a week and a half ago. When we checked our big bags at the ticket counter, they still insisted on going through every item inside our bags, running their little wand over every shoe, etc. Except that he didn't repack anything the correct way, put the toiletries I'd had in the outside pocket in the main part of my suitcase, and I got lotion all over everything. I would definitely keep all the shampoos/makeup that you're checking in a ziplock baggie in case you're also randomnly selected.
I wore flip flops to make it easier to take on and off, but I still had to place them in the bin to be X-Rayed, and whoever mentioned having your ID accessible, YES. We got asked for our ID 3 times while in the same line! They just had randomnly posted people in the one line to keep checking boarding passes and IDs.
To Kddani: I know that some insurance companies, like USAA offer great discounts on rental cars at several different companies. Also, when I flew last week, we had a car reserved, but noticed on the back of the inflight magazine a coupon for our particular company right before we landed, and were able to save additional money with that. So keep your eyes open, they let us use both offers at once.

I had to take off my shoes not once, but twice coming home from New Zealand flying to LAX even though they were flip flop type shoes. As annoying as it is, it's good to see that they are doing somethng.
To the OP, make sure you get there 2+ hours in advance and check as much as you can. Contacts need to be checked, and all non essintal meds that you won't need during the flight also.

Not sure about that. Every time I have flown in the past year, everyone has taken what ever they were wearing off.

I think it really depends on how thick your flip flops are and/or what airport you're at.
I fly out of HNL, and I've never been asked to take off my Reefs. 90% of the time at mainland airports I've usually been able to keep em on as well.
