AxiD670-
According to the panhellenic minutes posted on the UNCW website, each chapter did vote on the return of Alpha Phi- I believe only one chapter opposed the return but the rest voted for it.

This is probably like the Kappa recolonization at Georgia Southern. They just left maybe 18 months ago and they had a recolonization rush--I hear with good results! --this month. They were told that if they returned within x number of months, they didn't have to apply through NPC but otherwise, they'd take their chances with all the other NPC groups. And they had this gorgeous, 2-year-old house as well!

In general, why would chapters do this?

What are some of the reasons that a group would leave and then recolonize that quickly?

I understand when something was wrong in the chapter, and the national group wanted to let a certain group of people graduate before they re-colonized. (UGA has had some fraternities approach serious hazing penalities that way) But in those case the group was off campus for four or five years.

But when you leave and return in 18 months, what are you trying to do? Get the fresh start of a colony in terms of rush, but not lose the capital you might have established in terms of housing?

I never heard of fast recolonization until this year but I expect that Kappa had that big new house to pay for, so wanted to fill it. Also, they didn't want to have to go through the whole NPC colonization process and possibly not get chosen.

My daughter, whose chapter house at Ga Southern is next door to the Kappas, felt that nothing was horribly wrong over there, only that the 5 older groups were the sororities of choice.

Sometimes, when a chapter closes its because some members did not make "wise" decisions and therefore closing or suspension is more a less an action taken by inter/nationals. Although the sisterhood may be strong and the chapter may be doing well, it only takes a few members to make bad decisions- this causes the whole chapter to suffer the consequences.

Yes. Or save your spot in Panhellenic because you don't think the school will be open again soon and it's someplace you want to stay.

Although that sometimes backfires. If there are still "old" members on campus who aren't happy at the way things were handled, you'd better realize there's a possibility you're going to have to do beaucoup damage control. I'm not saying it can't work, but this is one of the stickiest situations there is - you have to really want to be there and think the results are going to be worth it.

I'm pretty sure that Alpha Phi was suspended for a year- meaning they could not be an active chapter on campus for a certain number of months. I think (don't quote me on this) that is was always intended for them to return to the campus. All this stuff is confusing to me as well- I think every situation is different!
