Slightly off topic, did anyone watch the Colbert Report last night? He put in a hotline for anyone Jewish who needs to call and apologize to him. He specifically mentioned Leiberman for not coming on his show, and a WSJ reporter who called Colbert a bully for his White House performance.

Both of his guests "called" him after they were on the show. Colbert even made a smart remark about how he should really apologize, but he wasn't going to because he's not Jewish.

/I was amused.
//But I'm Catholic.

Question since I don't have my prayer book with me and can't find the answer to this:
Are you supposed to read the Scheheheyanu at candlelighting or kiddush?

Tickets are free for guest at our synagogue, although we do ask for a donation if their means allow. No number is discussed. We also offer free membership for students at the local colleges. Being a small, lay-led congregation has its advantages, lol. We may be poor, but we're welcoming!
That's marvelous!! I remember a campaign when one of the high rolling donors came into the HQ with tickets for anyone needing/wanting one and thinking what a classy move that was.

We call H20s "Twice a Year Jews" in my family. Doesn't have the ring of "C & E Catholics" that my friends always talk about.

And the ticket thing...it sucks...but that's how synagogues get money. People who only show up 2x a year are also less likely to give anything to the synagogue beyond their membership dues. I think of it this way--my Catholic friends give money every week in the collection plate. If you were to add up that money for the whole year--it would probably be as much as a High Holiday Ticket. While I agree that it's unfair, many synagogues work on payment plans--and many people no longer pay 'full dues' for whatever reason. Synagogues are so crowded this time of year, it's also easy for them to bear the brunt of heavy foot traffic. I know my synagogue at home uses some of the ticket money to pay for a huge cleaning before and after each High Holiday so that things look wonderful when people come in, and afterward.

L'Shanah Tovah! (No, I'm not Jewish, just a lapsed Catholic raised in a (then) predominantly Jewish area of Miami! )

Happy New Year, all!

I was at Easter services at my boyfriend's dad's church and we were sitting in the "reserved for Pastor's family" row. Some lady behind us was complaining that since his family is at church every week they shouldn't need to go at Easter and take up a whole row.

Happy belated Jewish Birthday all of my Jewish Friends!

Live long and prosper.

GeekyPenguin, must have been a big Donor!

Wish you had turnned and grabbed Her Old hair piece off of her head and asked her to be quiet! There was a service going on!
