Lets look at this honestly. When you call your people Nupes and put on step shows, I really don't think you're reaching out to whites, you're just doing what you like, and inviting other like minded people to do the same.

When our outings involve golf, skeet shoots, Robert Earl Keen concerts and 80's cover bands, I really don't think black folks are generally like "hell yeah let me get on that." We don't do those things because we're recruiting white people or trying to keep blacks out, we do them because thats the kinda stuff we like. Holy crap people on this site are ridiculous.

No need to use the Nupes as example. BGLO members don't deny our primary focus and most of us aren't offended by acronyms/references such as HBCU, BGLO, MCGLO, PWI, HWGLO, etc.
It's some whites who are offended by acronyms/references like PWI and (H)WGLO.

It isn't just what we like and seeking like minded people, we generally are intentional in advancing the black community and being historically and predominantly black and African diasporic organizations. However, we are not limited to servicing the black community and seeking black and African diasporic people. Even still, many BGLO chapters do not gear their programs toward attracting a wider range of people. Thus, we end up being exclusionary anyway.

Well, generally speaking, you all know that those activities are most likely to attract white people. Some organizations intentionally exclude others by saying "if we do this, other races won't come so let's keep it exclusive" and other organizations simply understand that exclusion is a trickle down effect "it's fine if blacks come b/c we don't discriminate but we know that skeet shoots are likely to attract whites than blacks so let's continue doing stuff that WE like to do."

From the surface, there's no harm and no foul. Below the surface, being exclusive means that others aren't able to network with you all and receive whatever benefits of association there are. That's life but it can have negative outcomes (just like the exclusiveness of BGLOs can).

I only used nupes because thats a black glo term I don't understand, and most white people probably wouldnt.

Regarding wglo activities, I understand what you're saying, but I dare say nobody in my fraternity started doing those things because they exclude blacks. We do them because we enjoy them, and thus we continue to do them and recruit people with similar interests. About exclusivity, I'm glad we're exclusive, thats the point. If you wanted everyone to be in the organization, we'd have started a facebook group instead of a fraternity.

You and I really don't disagree on this topic so I'll just clarify some points:

LOL...I'm just telling you that you don't need to plead that case with most Black Greeks. Many if not most of "us" already agree with the premise of your argument.

Your fraternity was founded during a time when racial intolerance, discrimination, and overall exclusion were overt on a societal level. Dare I pretend as if excluding anything but a certain TYPE of white male wasn't an objective at one point.

Why SOME chapters of your fraternity do those things now might be a different story. Either way it is an exclusionary tactic, subconsciously for some and consciously for others. Not just race but social class and other markers.

I never said exclusion was inherently a bad thing. I'm glad my sorority has certain exclusionary methods in place, as well. It's the "why, how, and at what/whose expense" that CAN (note: CAN) make exclusion a negative---that's all I'm saying.

I don't think wglos do these things to exclude blacks, we do them because we enjoy doing it. If we want to exclude blacks, we just don't give them a bid, it's that easy.

I guess to each region it's own. In Miami, when Mansion has Nupe Night. It's always a probominately white turnout. So I don't know what ur talking about. I've heard of white ppl call themselves weirder things. So bad example.

By the way I love skeet shoots...I can't hit a damn thing!

I don't think his examples are bad at all. Miami is simply different than everywhere else in more ways than one.......

Most white people I know (including myself) probobly don't know what Mansion or Nupe Night is. .......and way more than likely, wouldn't fit in in Miami at all. I went to the NBA Finals in Miami and I felt like I had entered some sort of Twilight Zone.

Come on sis, back off the Nupes. I love those brothers, as a matter of fact my beau is a member of that fraternity. School Daze was a great movie and I am glad it was shot on my campus, Clark Atlanta University "One Exceptional University"!
