How attached to your stuff are you?

It is sometimes cheaper to unload all your furniture and pack up the car and start over in the new city.

You know I would. Except the check for that comes out to even more than 4K i found out. What a ripoff.

adpiucf, i've got it all listed online so if someone buys it, fine. If not, then i guess i'm screwed and have to move it all myself. My favorite thing about listing it online is people with Mexican sounding names that email me and obviously didn't read my listing price and offer a tenth of that.

If any illegal workers read greekchat, contact me and we'll get you a job moving my stuff.

You can always pitch it/leave it outside and post a note on craig's list to come and get it before the trash does!

I feel your pain-- this next move, I'm actually going to need to hire movers and a van. The days of me stuffing my clothes and bedding into my car and heading out cross-country are long gone.

Good luck with your move!!!!

As a veteran mover, I recommend you don't use U-Haul. I've had the worst experience with them, as well as many, many people I know. They're unreliable, their trucks aren't well-maintained and they break down, their customer "service" people are rude, and they're just plain awful. Perhaps they've improved in recent years, but better safe than sorry! You don't want to be one of the many stalled U-Haul trucks I always see alongside any major freeway.

U-Haul does, however, sell a fantastic selection of moving and packing supplies (boxes, bubble wrap, blankets, etc) and they're fairly cheap. Do invest in quality packing supplies, you won't regret it! And they're usually really easy to re-sell when you're done with them, if they're gently used.

I always had good experiences when I rented Ryder or Budget Trucks. Very well-maintained trucks and no service problems.

I always swear I'm gonna hire movers/packers next time I move, but then I run out of money and end up cursing and threatening that for sure, next time will be different...

My Dad is a big fan of going to Home Depot and buying a sixteen foot two by four so he can rent their flat bed. They have dirt cheap rentals as an incentive for people to buy home appliances from their stores but once you leave the lot you can use the truck to move anything.

I know we got the truck from Penske and had no problems with it. We didn't go 45, either -- but I don't remember how much we spent on the truck or gas.
